An obstacle of Facing Too Much At Once by Aaliyah - June 2016 Scholarship Essay

During my winter 2015-2016 semester of college I have had a few academic obstacles, but one of them became a major issue. The major obstacle that I was facing during that semester was attempting too much at once. By this I mean that I was attempting to fulfill way too many task within the same amount of time. This caused me to stress out completely. I felt like my head would explode from all the thought processing and multi-tasking in which I faced.
I remember sitting at my desk and having to study for a business midterm and trying to complete a Biology project within the same time frame. It was about six in the evening, and I was frustrated, and I had just gotten out of my classes for the day. My business midterm was coming up next week, but my Biology project was due by the end of the week. I had already started working on both task but I was stressed out and I felt as if I needed to have more work done. I didn’t know much of what I was studying for with my business midterm, and for my Biology project I had to find a science news article to write three pages about, I had to start my second page but my mind completely withdrew from the process of forming ideas.
After sitting there for about 45 minutes I remember having a major meltdown in front of my mother who came to check up on me. I continuously cried and I thought of myself as a complete failure. This is when my mom talked to me about being well organized and being able to prioritize my work so that I could be able to manage my time well when I work on my class assignments. After this massive situation I started to better use my strategies that I learned from my time management course. I had to stop everything I was doing in order to calm myself from the current situation, and to better prepare myself for the next time I run into a similar situation as this
I used familiar strategies in which I was taught within my time management course. I used a monthly calendar to record class assignment, due dates, and projects. I used phone reminders to notify me when a task needed to be done. I also created a weekly schedule to help me stay organized within my daily life. These strategies have taught and helped me so much at adapting to the college life and environment. I was no longer attempting way too much, for example, my business midterm exam would be the following Monday and my Biology project was due that Thursday, I would make sure to at least work on little parts of both assignments on a daily basis. I learned a valuable lesson from this obstacle and the lesson was to stay organized and that I have to prioritize my class assignments in order to avoid this major obstacle.
