Example Question #51 : Solving Grouping Games
Mr. Anderson, Mr. Baxter, Ms. Coleman, Mr. Dornan, and Ms. Ellington teach at Glendale High School. The subjects taught there are biology, chemistry, English, geography, and math. Each teacher teaches one subject. Mr. Dornan does not teach English. The science classes are taught by Mr. Anderson and Ms. Ellington. Mr. Baxter teaches geography.
If Ms. Ellington teaches biology, then which subject does Mr. Anderson teach?
Chemistry
Geography
Math
Biology
English
Chemistry
This is an easy question. Mr. Anderson and Ms. Ellington teach the sciences, of which there are two: biology and chemistry. If Ms. Ellington teaches biology, then Mr. Anderson teaches chemistry.
Example Question #52 : Solving Grouping Games
Mr. Anderson, Mr. Baxter, Ms. Coleman, Mr. Dornan, and Ms. Ellington teach at Glendale High School. The subjects taught there are biology, chemistry, English, geography, and math. Each teacher teaches one subject. Mr. Dornan does not teach English. The science classes are taught by Mr. Anderson and Ms. Ellington. Mr. Baxter teaches geography.
If there is a sixth subject, social studies, which cannot be taught by one of the science teachers and which meets at the same time as math class, (and waiving the normal requirement that each teacher teach only one subject) then which teacher would be available?
Ms. Coleman
Mr. Anderson
Ms. Ellington
None of the above
Mr. Dornan
Ms. Coleman
Mr. Anderson and Ms. Ellington are the two science teachers so they can be excluded. Mr. Dornan must teach math since Mr. Baxter teaches geography and since one of the conditions is that he doesn't teach English. That leaves Mr. Baxter and Ms. Coleman as possible candidates.
Example Question #53 : Solving Grouping Games
Each of seven baseball players—G, H, K, L, M, N, and O—will be placed on the active roster for one of two teams, the Angels and the Reds. The following conditions govern the roster with respect to these players.
If G is on the roster for the Angels, then H will play for the Reds.
If K plays for the Angels, then L and M will play for the Reds.
N plays on a different team than O.
M plays on a different team than G.
If O plays for the Angels, then H will also play for the Angels.
If L and N both play for the Angels, then which one of the following could be true?
O and M both play for the Angels.
G and M both play for the Reds.
K and M both play for the Reds.
G and K both play for the Angels
H and O both play for the Angels
K and M both play for the Reds.
If L and N play for the Angels, then we can deduce immediately that O and K must play for the Reds. That allows us to eliminate the other answers. Note that G and M must be on different teams, so that option cannot be the credited response.
Example Question #54 : Solving Grouping Games
For an upcoming film festival, a panel will be formed consisting of five well-known movie critics from New York, Chicago, and Hollywood. The possible movie critics to be solicited for the panel are as follows: from New York—Frank, Grayson, and Helen; from Chicago—Katie, Larry, and Michelle; and from Hollywood—Pat, Quentin, and Roxie. Selection on the panel is governed by the following conditions:
The panel must include at least one critic from each of the three cities.
If more than one critic from New York is selected, then only one critic from Hollywood will be selected.
Frank and Katie cannot both sit on the panel.
Katie and Michelle cannot both sit on the panel.
If Michelle is selected, then both Pat and Roxie must join her on the panel.
Which one of the following is an acceptable selection of critics for the panel?
Helen, Katie, Michelle, Pat, and Roxie
Frank, Grayson, Katie, Pat, and Quentin
Grayson, Helen, Katie, Larry, and Michelle
Grayson, Helen, Katie, Larry, and Roxie
Helen, Larry, Michelle, Pat, and Quentin
Grayson, Helen, Katie, Larry, and Roxie
Frank, Grayson, Katie, Pat, and Quentin can't be on the panel because that violates the condition that if only one NY critic is selected, then only one Hollywood critic is selected.
Grayson, Helen, Katie, Larry, and Michelle can't be on the panel because that violates the condition that all three cities must be represented.
Helen, Katie, Michelle, Pat, and Roxie can't be on the panel because that violates the condition that Katie and Michelle can’t be on the panel together.
Helen, Larry, Michelle, Pat, and Quentin can't be on the panel because that violates the condition that if Michelle is on the panel, then Roxie must also be on the panel.
Example Question #55 : Solving Grouping Games
If Michelle is the only Chicago critic on the panel, which one of the following must be true?
Helen and Pat are both on the panel.
Frank and Grayson are both on the panel.
Pat, Quentin, and Roxie are all on the panel.
Frank, Grayson, and Helen are all on the panel.
Grayson and Helen are both on the panel.
Pat, Quentin, and Roxie are all on the panel.
If Michelle is the only Chicago critic on the panel, then Pat and Roxie (both Hollywood critics) must be on the panel with her. That means only one New Yorker is allowed on the panel, because two New Yorkers preclude two Hollywood critics. Since one slot needs to be filled and that slot can’t be filled with a New Yorker or with a Chicago critic, it must be filled with the last remaining Hollywood critic, Quentin.
If Pat is the only Hollywood critic on the panel, which one of the following must be true?
If exactly two Chicago critics are on the panel, Grayson cannot be on the panel.
If exactly two Chicago critics are on the panel, Frank cannot be on the panel
If only one Chicago critic is on the panel, it must be Katie.
If Katie is on the panel, Grayson cannot be on the panel.
If Larry is on the panel, Frank cannot be on the panel.
If exactly two Chicago critics are on the panel, Frank cannot be on the panel
If Pat is on the panel, then Michelle can’t be on the panel because that would entail another Chicago critic being selected, which violates the condition presented in the question. If two Chicago critics are on the panel—namely, Katie and Larry—then Frank is excluded because Frank and Katie can’t both serve. So Frank can't be on the panel, which is the correct answer.
Example Question #564 : Lsat Logic Games
If both Grayson and Helen are among the critics selected to be on the panel, then the panel must include either
Katie or else Michelle
Michelle or else Quentin
Frank or else Michelle
Pat or else Quentin
Frank or else Katie
Frank or else Katie
Michelle is absolutely excluded because Michelle’s inclusion requires Pat and Roxie, but they can’t both serve, since two Hollywood critics can’t serve with two New York critics. Additionally, there is no scenario where both Frank and Katie can be excluded. So the credited response must be Frank, or else Katie.
Example Question #54 : Solving Grouping Games
Each of seven baseball players—G, H, K, L, M, N, and O—will be placed on the active roster for one of two teams, the Angels and the Reds. The following conditions govern the roster with respect to these players.
If G is on the roster for the Angels, then H will play for the Reds.
If K plays for the Angels, then L and M will play for the Reds.
N plays on a different team than O.
M plays on a different team than G.
If O plays for the Angels, then H will also play for the Angels.
What is the maximum number of players from these seven players who can be on the Angels roster?
Four
Three
Five
Six
Two
Four
H, M, O, and L can fit onto the Angels roster but it is impossible to fit any more players without violating at least one condition.
Example Question #55 : Solving Grouping Games
Each of seven baseball players—G, H, K, L, M, N, and O—will be placed on the active roster for one of two teams, the Angels and the Reds. The following conditions govern the roster with respect to these players.
If G is on the roster for the Angels, then H will play for the Reds.
If K plays for the Angels, then L and M will play for the Reds.
N plays on a different team than O.
M plays on a different team than G.
If O plays for the Angels, then H will also play for the Angels.
If G plays for the Reds, then which one of the following must be true?
H plays for the Angels.
N plays for the Reds.
L plays for the Angels.
K plays for the Reds.
O plays for the Angels.
K plays for the Reds.
If G plays for the Reds, then K cannot play for the Angels, because that would entail M playing for the Reds, which violates the condition that G and M can’t be on the same team. Therefore, K must be on the Reds.
Example Question #567 : Lsat Logic Games
If four of the critics on the panel are Frank, Larry, Quentin, and Roxie, which one of the following must be the fifth panel member?
Michelle
Helen
Grayson
Pat
Katie
Pat
Grayson and Helen are excluded because only one New Yorker is allowed on the panel by virtue of two Hollywood critics being on the panel (two or more New Yorkers preclude more than one Hollywood critic). Katie can’t be with Frank, so she is out. Michelle can’t be selected because that entails Pat and Roxie being on the panel, but there are only five slots available—not all of them can fit.
