Example Question #811 : Word Based Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
It is rare to find someone with a truly ___________ character, who always wants to do what is right and to be a truly good human person.
acceptable
agreeable
virtuous
joyous
regular
virtuous
This sentence is describing someone who has very high moral standards for himself or herself. This means that he or she is not merely an agreeable personality. No! He or she has a virtuous character, one that is ready to do good at any time. This moral aspect is needed for the sentence to be completed correctly.
Example Question #812 : Word Based Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Peter was quite ___________ of his tendency to shout at others when angry, so he would regularly apologize for his bad temper.
mindful
ashamed
aware
hateful
reflective
ashamed
Since Peter apologizes for his tendency to yell at others, we can rightly guess that he is not very proud of this character trait. It doesn't make sense to say that he is "hateful of it." We can say that he is embarrassed by it—or, is ashamed of it.
Example Question #813 : Word Based Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Laura did not like her son's _____________ attitude, so she always told him that he should try to look for the best thing in every situation.
depressive
negative
impulsive
angry
outrageous
negative
It seems that Laura is trying to encourage her son to be more positive. We don't know if he is being angry or impulsive (or really anything else). All that is indicated is that Laura wants him to look for the best in every situation. Therefore, his attitude must be rather negative. A negative person looks for the worst thing in every situation. It actually comes from roots that mean "no"—as though the negative person always says "no."
Example Question #814 : Word Based Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
The _____________ thing needed for the meal was the turkey. It really didn't matter what else was made for side dishes.
favorite
essential
acceptable
common
traditional
essential
You might think that this sentence is saying that the turkey was the common or traditional thing for the meal. It doesn't really indicate that at all. Perhaps the person eating the meal can only eat turkey meat. In that case, it is not really because of tradition that it is needed. Instead, the point of this sentence is that although other things don't really matter, the turkey is "essential." Another way of saying this is that it is something that you just can't go without.
Example Question #815 : Word Based Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
After many losses on the battlefield, the army was finally _____________, winning an important battle in the swamp.
overjoyed
victorious
intrigued
dejected
surprised
victorious
The most important clue in the sentence is the final clause. This means that there is a contrast being discussed here. The army went from losing to winning. Therefore, we can say that it was finally "victorious," at least in one very important battle.
Example Question #816 : Word Based Sentence Completions
Fill in the blank.
The __________ scheme of pestering their parents with endless questions, hiding in the house, and pretending to still do homework at night was a purposeful delay tactic the two children used so they wouldn't have to go to bed so early.
elaborate
thoughtless
thoughtless
cautious
straightforward
elaborate
The scheme used to trick their parents every night was well thought out and detailed or elaborate. They needed to think up several ways to delay the process of going to bed early.
Example Question #1911 : Isee Lower Level (Grades 5 6) Verbal Reasoning
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Even when the football team loses, they __________; the athletes always shake hands and congratulate their opponents.
often can't believe that they lost
celebrate afterwards with a good meal
display good sportsmanship
react with anger at their loss
completely ignore the other players
display good sportsmanship
The second part of this sentence tells us that the football team treats their opponents with respect, even after a tough loss. This immediately eliminates two choices: since the players are being nice, they clearly are not "reacting with anger at their loss," and they are shaking hands, not "ignoring the other players." Additionally, the statement that "they celebrate afterwards with a good meal" is certainly possible, but not confirmed by the rest of the sentence. The answer is that they "display good sportsmanship," which means they acted honorably (they weren't "sore losers") and played fairly.
Example Question #1912 : Isee Lower Level (Grades 5 6) Verbal Reasoning
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
The instructions for the history assignment were ambiguous, so Kaitlyn __________.
had to ask her teacher to explain them more clearly
became excited that she finally understood a project
was disappointed that she couldn't work with a group
easily completed the homework without confusion
worried that she wouldn't be able to finish all her homework before school the next day
had to ask her teacher to explain them more clearly
To complete this sentence, you need to know the meaning of the word "ambiguous." When instructions are ambiguous, they are not straightforward or easy to understand; instead, they have multiple possible meanings. Kaitlyn would likely be confused by instructions like these, and might need to ask her teacher for a better explanation. She would not "easily complete the homework without confusion" or immediately "understand the project," and we have no way of knowing whether these instructions would prevent her from working with a group.
Example Question #1913 : Isee Lower Level (Grades 5 6) Verbal Reasoning
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Although Brentan was an only child, he had always wanted a little brother, so he __________ on some weekends.
went shopping with his mother
volunteered with a kindergarten football team
tended to avoid small children
played video games by himself
had friends a few years older than he was
volunteered with a kindergarten football team
We know that Brentan wishes he had a younger brother, and that he does something on weekends that corresponds with this feeling. This weekend activity is probably related to young children; otherwise, Brentan's wish for a little sibling wouldn't be relevant. Having friends "a few years older" is backwards; we have no reason to think that Brentan wants older peers in his life. Similarly, he would not want to "avoid small children" if he wanted a little brother, and "shopping with his mother" isn't related to the rest of the sentence. The only sensible answer is that he volunteers with a sports team for young children.
Example Question #1914 : Isee Lower Level (Grades 5 6) Verbal Reasoning
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Although Martin had previously been unable to play basketball due to a knee injury, his __________.
class took many trips to nearby natural preserves
trips to the hospital were becoming more frequent
medical bills were extremely expensive
knee still hurt him nearly every day
health had improved enough for him to start as center tonight
health had improved enough for him to start as center tonight
With this sentence completion, as with most others, the first step you should take is to quickly scan the sentence for key words. Here, the word "although" is immediately obvious. We are told that Martin used to be unable to play basketball, but this word "although," which implies contrast, hints that the situation is now different. So, the answer choice that states that Martin's "knee still hurts him nearly every day" is incorrect because it does not contain this contrast. The same is true with the choice regarding medical bills; if Martin is injured, expensive medical costs would be unsurprising. Finally, the statement about the class trips is irrelevant. Our answer is clearly the choice stating that although Martin couldn't play before, he was now healthy enough to "start as center tonight."
