I worked as a peer tutor at Reed, but my tutoring experience goes back to my high school years, to when I volunteered to tutor elementary school and middle school students struggling with their schoolwork, and realized how significant a tutor can be in a student's life. I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels, in my volunteer work, as a private tutor, and as a peer tutor. Tutoring is a one-on-one experience, and I've found that the key to good tutoring is to realize that every individual student is different. My tutoring philosophy is that tutoring should by no means follow a one-size-fits-all approach. In my tutoring practice I focus on treating students as unique individuals, determining what is effective for each student, and getting to know each student's particular academic needs and goals. When it comes to SAT prep, I believe that understanding the material is always more important than simply understanding the test. I teach specific testing strategies and tricks, but I ensure that at the heart of my tutoring is the academic material itself. A student who simply masters the strategies and tricks might do great on the SAT, but the student who understands the material will do great on the SAT and continue to do great in college. I have particular experience and expertise in tutoring math (of all levels) and SAT prep, but I also tutor for other standardized tests, and for English, philosophy, writing, and history classes. When I'm not tutoring, I'm probably reading, listening to music, cooking desserts or shopping at a thrift store.
