I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, working towards a pre-med double major in Psychology and Biology (with a specialization in Neuroscience). Beginning in my early teens, I began working and volunteering as a tutor in a variety of environments: I began as a volunteer at a summer program for underprivileged children at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin, and since I have worked as a private elementary school tutor, a private SAT-prep tutor, and a preschool tutor for the Neighborhood Schools Program in South Side Chicago. I have taken, and succeeded in, a broad range of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, and am familiar with the latest formats, question varieties, and scoring guidelines of these standardized tests, along with the SAT. My teaching philosophy is to go beyond "teaching to the test". Although test-taking skills are crucial for any assessment, I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can do is to enhance and help develop conceptual understanding in our clients. I believe that once a student understands something at the conceptual level, he or she will be much better prepared for the topic, not only in the specific test we are preparing for, but anywhere else it may come up. Memorizing words or equations might help somebody in the short term, but understanding why that word means what it means, or what an equation is actually depicting is worth the extra effort. Besides test-prep I think I can be a great help in writing and editing, as I have experience in everything from short, timed essays such as the SAT essay, to college essays, to research papers such as the IB Extended Essay. I am fully fluent in Spanish for anyone who wishes to communicate in or practice the language.

I'm passionate about guiding high schoolers through the college application process. The admissions process is probably one of the most confusing, anxiety-inducing experiences you'll have in high school, but I'm full of ideas for making the entire process as successful and stress-free as possible. I've successfully guided many students through every stage of admissions -- from figuring out where to apply and then staying organized and on-track, to "packaging" themselves and producing a perfect personal statement -- and I love witnessing them achieve their admissions dreams.

I am a dedicated, highly motivated individual with a passion for enhancing the learning experiences of others. I have taught as a classroom teacher and as a volunteer at state and national parks for the past few years. I focus particularly on highlighting connections between various subject matter to individuals' everyday lives. Frequently Asked Questions
A tutor can guide you through the critical process of narrowing your initial interest into a focused, arguable research question that meets IB criteria. They'll help you avoid questions that are too broad (like "Is Shakespeare relevant today?") or too narrow to sustain 4,000 words, and ensure your question is open-ended enough to allow for genuine inquiry. Through targeted questioning and feedback, tutors help you refine your RQ so it's specific enough to research effectively while remaining genuinely interesting to explore.
A strong Extended Essay argument builds a clear line of reasoning where each body paragraph develops a specific point that directly answers your research question, rather than simply presenting information about your topic. Weak essays often list facts or observations without explaining how they support your central claim. A tutor can help you identify where your argument becomes descriptive rather than analytical, and show you how to use evidence to prove a point rather than just illustrate it—this distinction is crucial for achieving higher IB marks.
Literary analysis requires examining *how* an author creates meaning through technique—word choice, imagery, structure, tone—rather than *what* happens in the text. A tutor can help you develop the habit of asking "why did the author make this choice?" and "what effect does this create?" for every piece of evidence you use. They'll show you how to integrate close textual analysis with your broader argument, ensuring that your discussion of literary devices directly supports your research question rather than existing as standalone observations.
Effective evidence integration in an Extended Essay means introducing your quote or example, providing the quote itself, and then explaining its significance to your argument—not just dropping quotes without context. A tutor can help you avoid the common pitfall of using evidence that's interesting but doesn't actually support your point, and show you how to embed shorter quotes smoothly into your sentences rather than relying on block quotes. They'll also help you balance direct evidence with your own analysis, ensuring your voice and argument remain central rather than being overwhelmed by sources.
A coherent Extended Essay requires each body paragraph to build on the previous one while maintaining focus on your research question, rather than treating paragraphs as isolated points. A tutor can help you create a logical sequence where your argument develops progressively—for example, moving from foundational concepts to more complex analysis, or building evidence that cumulatively answers your RQ. They'll also help you write topic sentences and transitions that explicitly connect each paragraph to your central argument, making your reasoning transparent to the reader.
The IB Extended Essay requires consistent in-text citations and a bibliography formatted according to a standard style (MLA, APA, or Chicago are most common—check your school's preference). A tutor can help you understand not just the mechanics of citation, but why it matters: proper citations allow readers to verify your sources and distinguish your ideas from others' work, which directly impacts your marks on the criterion for research. They can also help you avoid over-citation (citing common knowledge) and under-citation (failing to credit sources), both of which affect your credibility.
Effective revision for an Extended Essay goes beyond fixing grammar—it requires reading your draft with fresh eyes to evaluate whether your argument actually answers your research question and whether your evidence genuinely supports each claim. A tutor can help you develop a revision strategy that addresses big-picture issues first (Does my argument make sense? Is it convincing?) before moving to sentence-level editing. They can also provide specific, actionable feedback on areas where your analysis is weak or your reasoning unclear, helping you understand *why* a section needs revision rather than just correcting it for you.
English Extended Essay students often struggle with moving beyond summary to sustained analysis, maintaining analytical focus while incorporating sufficient textual evidence, and developing arguments that genuinely engage with the complexity of literary texts rather than oversimplifying them. Many students also find it challenging to balance close reading of specific passages with broader thematic arguments, or to avoid letting their personal response to a text override their analytical investigation. A tutor experienced in Extended Essays can help you identify which of these challenges affects your writing and provide targeted strategies to address them.
