I'm a current undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania working towards my Bachelor of Science in Engineering for Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics. I value education and have tutored my peers and underprivileged kids with ADHD, dysgraphia, and autism in the STEM-E Youth Development organization. I have experience tutoring in math (Kindergarten - MVC), science, and English, and I am most passionate with drafting/3D modeling and helping students prepare for college through college admissions consulting and standardized test prep (mainly the math portions). I believe everyone can learn anything if they have the right attitude and good instructors, and with this motto, I strive to ensure that my students will leave each lesson understanding the content we cover and excited to learn more.

I am most passionate about biology and chemistry. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students.
Thermodynamics, equilibrium, and electrochemistry each demand a different kind of thinking, and AP Chemistry punishes students who treat them as separate chapters instead of interconnected ideas. Jonathan's background spans both biology and chemistry at Cornell, so he unpacks concepts like Gibbs free energy and Le Chatelier's principle by showing how they govern real chemical and biological systems. Rated 4.9 by students.
Stoichiometry, equilibrium, and thermodynamics each require a different kind of problem-solving, and AP Chemistry expects fluency in all of them by May. Kendall approaches each unit by anchoring the math in the underlying chemical logic — why a reaction favors products, what a mole ratio actually represents — so students can reason through unfamiliar problems on the exam. She also dedicates time to the lab-based questions that many students overlook in their prep.
Cornell's engineering curriculum put Ravnoor through rigorous college-level chemistry, and his computer science training sharpened the algorithmic thinking that pays off when students need to systematically work through multi-step problems like limiting reagent calculations or electrochemical cell setups. He teaches AP Chemistry's quantitative sections by treating each problem like a debugging exercise — isolating variables, checking units at every step, and building toward answers methodically rather than jumping to formulas. Rated 5.0 by students.
AP Chemistry's jump from memorizing periodic trends to applying thermodynamics and equilibrium concepts trips up a lot of students. Eric's engineering coursework at Duke required mastering these same principles — reaction kinetics, enthalpy calculations, electrochemistry — and he teaches them with the quantitative rigor the AP exam demands. Rated 5.0 by students.
Premed neuroscience coursework at Rice University means Aditi has worked through college-level chemistry where concepts like electron configuration, molecular geometry, and acid-base reactions aren't optional — they're prerequisites for understanding how the brain functions at a chemical level. She unpacks AP Chemistry's conceptual questions by tying abstract ideas back to observable phenomena, making topics like periodicity and bonding theory stick. Rated 4.8 by students.
Thermodynamics, equilibrium, and electrochemistry are where most AP Chemistry students start losing their footing. Sharon tackles these topics by connecting abstract concepts to biological systems she knows inside out from medical school — like why buffer systems matter in blood pH regulation. That cross-disciplinary lens makes the toughest AP Chem material more intuitive.
In 2022, I completed my Ph.D. in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University. My goal is to use my expertise in chemistry, algebra, and calculus to help students not only learn but also enjoy these subjects. My favorite subject to teach is general chemistry as it highlights the importance of interdisciplinary study combining, physics, math, and even biology. While my degree expertise lies in chemistry, I am equally adapt in teaching all levels of mathematics. I take pride in reinforcing mathematics concepts with tangible applications in other fields to highlight its importance and making learning interesting.
Thermochemistry, equilibrium, and electrochemistry each demand a different kind of thinking, which is part of what makes AP Chem so challenging. Kate tackles each unit by connecting the math to the molecular-level story — explaining why Le Chatelier's principle works, not just how to apply it. Her engineering coursework in chemistry gives her a practical fluency that translates well to exam prep.
Neuroscience at Yale meant David didn't just take chemistry — he needed it to make sense of membrane potentials, neurotransmitter synthesis, and receptor pharmacology, all of which rest on principles like electrochemistry and molecular interactions that show up directly on the AP Chemistry exam. That gives him a knack for explaining why a reaction proceeds spontaneously or how intermolecular forces dictate physical properties, because he learned those concepts as tools for solving real problems, not as isolated textbook chapters. Rated 5.0 by students.
Cornell's environmental engineering program requires a chemistry sequence heavy on aqueous equilibria, redox reactions, and thermodynamics — exactly the content that dominates AP Chemistry's most demanding free-response questions. Akanksha draws on that coursework plus her experience teaching chemistry through Cornell's STEP program to walk students through topics like acid-base titrations and reaction energetics with real-world environmental applications that make the material stick. Rated 4.8 by students.
Notre Dame's pre-med track put Aidan through the full college chemistry gauntlet — general and organic — where concepts like electron configuration, molecular polarity, and reaction spontaneity weren't just exam topics but prerequisites for everything that followed. He scored a 35 on the ACT, and that same precision shows up in how he teaches AP Chemistry's trickiest quantitative work, particularly gas law problems and solution chemistry where one missed conversion derails the entire calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your first session is an opportunity to assess your current understanding of chemistry concepts and identify specific areas where you need support—whether that's thermodynamics, equilibrium, kinetics, or exam strategy. The tutor will discuss your goals (improving your overall grade, targeting a specific AP score, or mastering particular units), review your class materials, and create a personalized plan tailored to your learning style and timeline before the exam.
Score improvement depends on your starting point, consistency with tutoring, and how much time you dedicate to practice. Students who work with a tutor typically see gains by strengthening weak content areas, learning efficient problem-solving strategies, and building confidence with the exam format. Most students benefit significantly from focused preparation over 8-12 weeks, especially when combining tutoring with regular practice tests and review.
Many students struggle with the math-heavy aspects of stoichiometry and equilibrium calculations, conceptual understanding of atomic structure and bonding, and managing time during the multiple-choice section. Additionally, the free-response questions require clear communication of lab procedures and chemical reasoning, which is different from just knowing the content. A tutor can help you break down these challenging topics and develop strategies for explaining your thinking clearly on exam day.
Practice tests are essential—they help you understand the exam's pacing, question formats, and the types of problems you'll encounter on test day. Taking full-length practice tests under timed conditions also reveals which content areas need more review and helps reduce test anxiety. A tutor can review your practice test results with you, identify patterns in mistakes, and adjust your study plan accordingly to maximize your score.
Look for tutors with strong chemistry backgrounds—ideally those who have taught AP Chemistry, scored well on the AP exam themselves, or have advanced chemistry education. They should understand both the content deeply and the specific demands of the AP exam, including how to approach free-response questions and manage time during the multiple-choice section. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have proven experience helping students succeed in AP Chemistry.
A solid approach is to start with tutoring 1-2 times per week several months before the exam, focusing on challenging units and building foundational understanding. As exam day approaches, increase frequency to 2-3 sessions weekly and shift focus toward practice tests, timing strategies, and free-response question techniques. Between sessions, dedicate time to problem sets and review notes—tutoring works best when combined with consistent independent study.
Test anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared or uncertain about question formats. Working with a tutor builds confidence through repeated exposure to AP-style questions, mastery of problem-solving strategies, and practice under timed conditions. Your tutor can also teach you breathing techniques and mental strategies for staying calm during the exam, and help you develop a personalized test-day approach that plays to your strengths.
