Example Question #87 : Data Analysis
Find the mean of this set of numbers:
First add up all of the numbers in the set:
Then divide by the number of elements in the set:
Answer:
Example Question #107 : Data Analysis And Probability
In Ms. Olson's class, there were 5 students who took an exam, earning a mean score of 86. Jacob then took the exam as well, earning a score of 91. What is the new mean?
The mean is found by adding the scores together, and then dividing by the number of items.
Example Question #521 : Ssat Middle Level Quantitative (Math)
In Maria's family, her parents are both 45 years old, and her younger brother is 2 years younger than she is. What is the mean of their ages, if Maria is 5 years old?
The mean of a set is found by finding the sum of the set and then dividing by the number of items in the set. Given that both of her parents are 45 years old, that Maria is 5 years old, and that her brother is 3 years old (being 2 years younger than she is), the mean is calculated using this equation:
Example Question #92 : How To Find Mean
Olivia is considering buying a new car. She is looking at three different cars. The price for the three cars is , and , respectively. What is the average price of a car Olivia is considering?
First add up the prices of each of the cars:
Then divide that number by the total number of cars:
Answer: The average price of a car Olivia is considering is
Example Question #93 : How To Find Mean
Find the mean of this set of numbers:
First, add the numbers in the set:
Then divide by the amount of numbers in the set:
Answer: The mean is .
Example Question #331 : Data Analysis
Find the mean of the following set of numbers:
To solve, simply add them all up and divide by their total.
Thus,
Example Question #337 : Data Analysis And Probability
The annual total of potatoes grown on a farm is . What would the monthly average be for the year?
To solve for mean, you must add up all of the values in your set then divide that total by the number of values you have.
The problem already gave us the total amount which represents the total for the year.
They ask for the monthly average which would mean you divide the total amount by the number of months which there are months in a year.
So the answer would be,
potatoes per month.
Example Question #332 : Data Analysis
Here is a set of values from an experiment:
How would the mean change if you change to ?
Not enough information to find a solution
It would stay the same
It would decrease
It would increase
It would increase
Since the mean is calculated by adding up all of your values together and dividing by the total number, it is affected by changes in values on the high or low end. Since one of the values is increased, the numerator in your calculation would also increase. But the total number of values did not so the denominator stays the same. With only the numerator going up, the final value will also go up.
Example Question #339 : Data Analysis And Probability
Find the mean of the following data set:
Find the mean of the following data set:
First, let's rearrange our numbers in increasing order:
Now, the mean can be found by dividing the sum of our numbers, by the total number of terms. In this case, we have 15 terms, we do the following:
So, our mean is 79.
Example Question #85 : How To Find Mean
Adding new values to a set will not necessarily change the mean that you previously calculated. True or false?
True
False
True
If you add a value that is the same value as the mean, the mean will stay the same. Your total value will proportionally increase by the average value which will be offset by increasing the denominator by .
