Example Question #1081 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Nigel loved to have long ___________ with friends, often talking late into the night about many different topics.
debates
arrangements
conversations
disagreements
arguments
conversations
The sentence merely states that Nigel liked talking for a long time with his friends. Therefore, do not read too much into the sentence. It does not tell us that he liked arguing with them or even that he liked to debate them. The best option is the simplest in this case—"conversation."
Example Question #1082 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
It is an unfair __________ to say that elderly people are afraid of technology. Even though some are indeed afraid of new technological items, many older people use technology with skill and enjoyment!
idea
lie
stereotype
consideration
conclusion
stereotype
Notice in the second sentence that it is admitted that some older people are afraid of new technology. The implication here, however, is that it is unfair to think that this applies in general to all older people. Instead, many use technology with enjoyment and skill. A stereotype is a kind of unfair idea that may be true in some limited way but is not absolutely true.
Example Question #1083 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Everyone treated John as though he were a(n) __________, when in fact he had taken the money from his brother only so he could prevent him from buying fireworks that would have been dangerous.
barbarian
criminal
outcast
delegate
thief
thief
The second half of this sentence provides a justification for John's action. From good motives, he took the money from his brother. It seems that everyone overlooked this fact and was judging him negatively. Now, likely everyone was treating him like an outcast or as a criminal. The best option will be one that describes the fact that John had taken the money. Thus, it would seem best to say that everyone treated him as thief. Try to keep your words as close as possible to the context when answering questions like this. You will not always have to do this, but in questions like this one, it makes all the difference!
Example Question #1084 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Because he was so lazy, Egbert only did the __________ amount of work necessary to get a passing grade. His motto was: "Nothing more than what is necessary!"
clearest
simplest
assigned
inactive
minimum
minimum
For this sentence, you are lucky to have Egbert's motto. He didn't want to do anything extra, so he wanted to do a minimal amount of work. The word "minimum" can be used as an adjective to mean "the least". Thus, Egbert wants to do "just enough" to get by with a passing grade.
Example Question #1085 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Although the house was very elegant, it was also surprisingly __________, having only a few ornaments throughout its many rooms.
unfinished
simple
decrepit
impoverished
bankrupt
simple
From the description, the house in question seems to be very elegant and also very simple. We cannot say that it is in poor condition ("decrepit"). All that the sentence tells us is that it does not have much ornamentation; therefore, it is plain and "simple." Something "simple" can still be very elegant, as long as it has an overall good style. This appears to be the case for the house discussed in this sentence.
Example Question #1086 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
The love between two people is not always ___________. One person may deeply love the other person, but that other person may not love in return.
warm
delightful
fulfilling
mutual
ecstatic
mutual
Notice the description in the second sentence. It is said that one person may love while the other person does not love. This means that the two people do not share in the same love. When something is "mutual," multiple people experience the same thing. When love is just "one way", then we do not have such mutual feelings.
Example Question #1087 : Sentence Completions
Choose the word or set of words that best completes the following sentence.
Fearful that the monster might find him, John couldn't help but __________, his shaking body being matched by teeth that chattered out of fear.
slither
tremble
wiggle
champ
chew
tremble
The first (and clearest) clue to this question is found in the clause at the end of the sentence. Clearly, John's body is shaking from fear. This shaking is accompanied by chattering teeth as well. Such fearful shaking is not wiggling. Trembling is a kind of shaking that happens because of fear. Hence, the mention of fear at the start of the question can help you select the correct answer.
Example Question #1088 : Sentence Completions
Fill in the blank.
Sandra pulled out of her driveway slowly, making sure to __________.
ignore the other cars around her
look both ways on the street
meet her brother for lunch downtown
hit the mailbox on the way out
buy a new laptop later that day
look both ways on the street
To properly complete this sentence, choose a completion that would be a reason to drive slowly out of a driveway. Meeting her brother for lunch downtown and buying a new laptop today are not relevant answers. Sandra would not drive slowly to “hit the mailbox on the way out” or “ignore other cars around her,” so the correct answer is that she would “look both ways on the street”.
