I am a firm believer in problem-based learning, and encourage students to ask questions and think for themselves. Although I will not provide answers or a quick and simple fix, I will provide students with guidance and encouragement as they work through problems and learn to apply familiar concepts to unfamiliar situations. I also believe strongly in teaching "to the student," and therefore adapt my teaching to fit each individual's needs and learning styles. By pinpointing and addressing students' weaknesses and creating a comfortable, nurturing environment in which they can learn, I work to help students solidify their knowledge base and learn how to learn. Hobbies: baking, running, art, travel, reading, photography, writing, books, traveling, music

I am a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany. I graduated Cum Laude in May, 2013.I received my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with a minor in Philosophy. Since graduation, I have been coaching wrestling at a nearby high school, as well as serving at a local restaurant. I have been tutoring students since I was in high school, in subjects ranging from simple arithmetic to advanced calculus to SAT preparation. I have even tutored middle school and high school Spanish! My clients have ranged from middle school students to college students. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about mathematics. I have found that there is no correct way to tutor students, for every student has vastly different needs; therefore, I try to always teach in a way that specifically caters to each individual's specific needs. I strongly believe that a good education is key to a happy and successful life. Oftentimes, students just need the right person with the right teaching style for that education to be a fun, easy process. In my free time, I enjoy reading, working out, word and number games, and spending time with my friends and family.

Frequently Asked Questions
ASPIRE Math is divided into five content areas: Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Most students struggle most with Algebra and Functions, particularly with multi-step equation solving, function notation, and understanding how to manipulate expressions. Geometry also presents challenges because it requires both computational skills and spatial reasoning. A tutor can identify which specific content areas are weakest and build targeted practice around those concepts.
ASPIRE Math has 60 questions in 60 minutes, which means spending too long on difficult problems can leave easier ones unanswered. Effective pacing strategies include: quickly identifying problem type, skipping extremely difficult questions initially and returning to them, and practicing with a timer to build speed without sacrificing accuracy. A tutor can help you develop a personal pacing strategy based on your strengths—for example, if you're strong in Algebra but weaker in Geometry, you might allocate more time to Geometry questions and move quickly through Algebra.
ASPIRE Math includes multiple-choice questions and grid-in (student-produced response) questions. Grid-in questions are often more challenging because there's no answer choice to check your work against, and you must enter your answer correctly in the grid format. Multiple-choice questions allow you to use elimination strategies and check answers by substitution. A tutor can teach you format-specific strategies, like how to avoid common grid-in entry errors and when to use answer choices to work backwards on multiple-choice problems.
The best way to identify weak areas is through practice tests with detailed score breakdowns by content area. After taking a full practice test, look at which topics (Algebra, Functions, Geometry, etc.) have the lowest accuracy rates, then analyze whether your mistakes are conceptual misunderstandings or careless errors. A tutor can review your practice test results with you, pinpoint patterns in your mistakes, and create a focused study plan that addresses the specific concepts you're struggling with rather than reviewing material you already know well.
Algebra and Functions require fluency with multiple skills—manipulating expressions, solving equations, understanding variables, and interpreting function notation—all of which build on each other. Students often have gaps in foundational skills (like factoring or working with exponents) that make advanced problems feel impossible. Additionally, ASPIRE Math tests these topics in complex, multi-step problems that combine several skills. A tutor can diagnose exactly where your foundation is weak and rebuild it systematically, so that more advanced problems become manageable.
Test anxiety on ASPIRE Math often stems from two sources: uncertainty about whether you can solve a problem (content anxiety) and pressure from the time limit (pacing anxiety). Tutoring addresses content anxiety by building genuine confidence through mastery of difficult topics—when you truly understand the material, anxiety decreases naturally. For pacing anxiety, repeated practice under timed conditions helps you become comfortable with the pace and develop strategies to manage it. A tutor can also teach you mental strategies for staying calm when you encounter a difficult problem, like taking a breath and moving on rather than panicking.
Practice tests serve two purposes: building test-taking stamina and identifying weak areas. Early in your prep, take practice tests untimed to focus on accuracy and understanding; once you're comfortable with content, take them under realistic time pressure. After each test, review every single problem you missed or guessed on—not just the ones you got wrong, but also ones where you weren't confident. A tutor can help you create a strategic practice test schedule that spaces tests appropriately and ensures you're using each one to improve, rather than just taking tests without learning from them.
An effective ASPIRE Math tutor should understand the specific content tested (Number and Quantity through Statistics), know common student misconceptions in each area, and be able to explain concepts multiple ways since different students learn differently. They should also be skilled at test strategy—knowing which problems are worth spending time on, how to use answer choices strategically, and how to manage the 60-minute time constraint. Beyond content knowledge, they should be able to diagnose whether your mistakes are conceptual or careless, and adjust their teaching accordingly.
