I'm a law student and long time tutor who's just made the move to Varsity. I've been tutoring for about eight years now, since I first started working with a friend of a friend's child on his SATs. I graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in economics, and I'm at Hofstra Law School.I tutor the SATs, ACTs, LSAT, GRE, basically all high school subjects, and a bevy of college ones, including history, psychology, economics, law, and writing. That's not because I'm an expert in everything - it's because the only thing I enjoy more than learning is helping someone else learn. A good tutor doesn't just explain the subject to you - they explain what's cool about it, how it applies to your life, and why you want to learn it. If I have to brush up on my AP Chemistry as an excuse to explain why dimensional analysis is actually the most useful math you'll ever learn, I find it thrilling, not a chore. That's really my whole paradigm, as a tutor. Every subject has a relation to both everyday life, and to the coolest parts of the collective achievements of humanity. Learning not just what Pi is, but what it means, is treading the same ground as the people who built the pyramids. We lose that joy - the enrichment granted by greater understanding - too often in sterile and boring classrooms. My goal is to help students attain mastery by providing the context and tools that let them have "Eureka!" moments.Learning is fun, and tutoring is more than just being a living wikipedia article. It's giving life to the dry and soulless problem set, making fun of the trap answers on the LSAT, and linking history to its greatest stories. I don't need gimmicks and games to make that happen. I just find where a student and I can connect over the material, how they learn, and what they're having trouble with.I won't guarantee anyone a score on a test or promise that everyone can get an A in every subject. But I do promise not to waste anyone's time or money. Every session, my students will learn new facts, new techniques, or new ways to understand some boring idea. That's not because I'm the smartest guy in the room: it's because I simply love seeing people learn.

I am a first year public health student at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Since I was in high school, I had the privilege of taking several accelerated classes in multiple subjects ranging from English, Biology, Literature, Algebra, and Modern Language like AP Spanish Literature. I don't believe in a favorite subject, I feel that with hard work and dedication anyone can adapt and find joys in every subject. As a tutor of local neighborhood children, and a great resource to my peers in school, I carry the reputation as the person to reach out to whenever explanations are required. As a college student, I enjoy the greater depth of information that we cover, it proves to me that education knows no bounds and any information can be incorporated in daily life.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Since graduation, I joined the Rhode Island Teaching Fellows where I had the opportunity to work towards a teaching certificate and begin my journey in the classroom. I spent the past year teaching 10th and 11th grade students life science and chemistry.Outside of academia, I enjoy going for long runs. I used to be a sprinter while I was still in school and decided to take on the new challenge of long distance running. I also enjoy various other activities such as kayaking, indoor rock climbing and running off to amusement parks as often as possible. Additionally, I am an avid reader and am always looking for a good book to read on a typical afternoon. My teaching philosophy revolves around breaking content down as much as possible so that all students can understand. I believe even the most complicated of materials can be understood if the teacher takes the time necessary for students to build their skill set and confidence and this was especially useful to me in my time as a chemistry teacher.

I view tutoring as an opportunity to share my passion for languages, literature, and the law with my students. Using a student-centered approach, I aim to meet students where they are, develop a clear plan for their progress, and ensure they meet their goals. I use a variety of instructional techniques to engage with students of all different learning styles. While holding students accountable to their personally tailored goals, I also try to make learning enjoyable by exciting the intellectual curiosity of my students. In terms of my language qualifications, I have received extensive training in language teaching techniques for both French and English as a Second Language. I was a French literature major who graduated cum laude and received highest honors for my senior thesis. I have spent hundreds of hours teaching English and French in classroom settings, and I bring all this experience to bear in my one-on-one tutoring sessions. I am prepared to help students of all levels improve their French and/or English language skills, from the fundamentals of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, to advanced grammar, composition, and cultural fluency. As for test preparation, I draw on my personal success on the SAT (perfect verbal score of 800) and the LSAT (167/180, 94th percentile nationally) to provide insight on test-taking strategies and knowledge of specific content areas. I recognize the inherent stress involved in taking standardized tests under timed conditions, but I strive to empower my students to do their best on test day through diligent preparation beforehand, and by breaking down the seemingly overwhelming task into more manageable parts. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

Hi! My name is Jenn and I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in May of 2011 with a Bachelor's of Science in biological sciences and a minor in chemistry. I did undergraduate research in a developmental biology lab, and studied abroad in Tanzania to do an independent research project on AIDS and Tuberculosis there. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate school to get my Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.During my time at Pitt, I was involved in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. We did various service projects including Adopt-A-Block, partnering with United Cerebral Palsy, and most importantly to me, tutoring in Pittsburgh Public Schools. I tutored middle school science in the classroom and had a really great time working with the students, getting to know them, and helping them to grasp new ideas and concepts. It was a joy to watch them learn and share the pride they exhibited in their newfound knowledge. One method I found to be particularly effective was to break complex concepts down into simpler parts and help the student to organize those parts in a way that made more sense to them. This helped them to see the big picture. In my free time, I am training for a half-marathon, I play in a softball league in Philadelphia, I bike, read, and enjoy cooking.I look forward to meeting with you and your student in the near future!

Frequently Asked Questions
The Rhode Island Bar Exam pass rate typically hovers around 70-75% for first-time test takers, though this can vary by year. Many test takers struggle with specific subjects like Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Constitutional Law—areas where targeted gaps in knowledge can significantly impact overall performance. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps identify your weak areas and provides focused reinforcement, which is particularly valuable since bar exam success requires mastery across multiple complex subjects simultaneously.
Bar exam candidates typically struggle with three key areas: managing the sheer volume of material, applying multiple legal doctrines to complex fact patterns, and maintaining stamina during the multi-day exam. Many test takers also find that law school preparation, while valuable, doesn't fully align with the bar exam's emphasis on tested subjects and the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) format. Additionally, balancing bar prep with work or other commitments makes it easy to fall behind. Personalized tutoring addresses these challenges by creating a customized study plan tailored to your strengths and weaknesses, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Bar prep courses provide comprehensive outlines and lectures, but they treat all students the same way. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to diagnose exactly where you're struggling—whether it's a specific subject, essay writing technique, or test-taking strategy—and then focus intensively on those areas. This targeted approach is particularly effective for the MBE, where consistent performance across 200 questions requires deep understanding of foundational concepts. Tutors can also adapt their teaching style to your learning preferences and provide immediate feedback on practice essays and multiple-choice answers.
Essay questions on the Rhode Island Bar Exam require you to spot legal issues, apply relevant law, and reach conclusions—all under time pressure. Many bar exam candidates struggle with issue spotting or organizing their analysis in a way that earns maximum points. A tutor can review your practice essays in detail, provide specific feedback on your issue spotting and legal analysis, teach you state-specific rules and procedural requirements, and help you develop a consistent essay writing structure. This personalized feedback is invaluable because grading rubrics reward clear organization and complete analysis, and individual feedback is far more effective than generic grading guidelines.
The MBE tests seven subjects—Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Evidence, Real Property, Torts, and Civil Procedure—with 200 multiple-choice questions (100 per day). Success requires not just knowing the law, but understanding how to apply it quickly and confidently to complex hypothetical fact patterns. Many test takers struggle with identifying the correct answer when multiple options seem plausible, or they run out of time. A tutor can help you master the tested doctrines, teach you effective strategies for reading and answering MBE questions efficiently, and provide targeted practice on your weakest subjects. Working through practice questions with expert guidance helps you build the pattern recognition skills that separate strong MBE performers from average ones.
The Rhode Island Bar Exam is administered by the Rhode Island Supreme Court and includes the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) plus Rhode Island-specific essays. Rhode Island also has specific rules regarding Evidence, Civil Procedure, and professional responsibility that differ from other states. Additionally, Rhode Island requires applicants to meet character and fitness requirements and complete specific continuing legal education hours after passage. A tutor familiar with Rhode Island bar exam requirements can ensure your preparation covers state-specific nuances and help you understand which MBE subjects require particular attention given Rhode Island's unique procedural rules.
Most bar exam candidates benefit from 8-12 weeks of focused preparation, starting immediately after law school graduation or shortly before your bar exam date. However, your ideal timeline depends on your law school performance, the strength of your foundation in tested subjects, and how much time you can dedicate daily. Many successful candidates spend 30-40 hours per week on bar prep. Connecting with a tutor early in your preparation allows you to assess your starting point, identify subjects that need extra attention, and create a realistic study schedule. This is especially valuable if you're working while studying or if you struggled in certain subjects during law school—both situations where a structured, personalized approach pays dividends.
