I taught swimming lessons when I was in high school. I am available to tutor German I and II and the ACT. I like to tutor German because I love the culture and the language (and have visited Germany twice). My style of tutoring is more laid back, but I like to focus on areas that students have a particularly hard time.Outside of academics, I am an outdoorsman. My goal is to help every student reach their full potential and discover ways that they can be successful academically so that they develop a love for learning they stays with them for life. I have a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Texas A&M University and a Master's in Science in organic chemistry from Texas Tech University. I was a graduate student for a total of six years at those two universities and taught undergraduate organic and general chemistry labs during those years. I have taught high school chemistry as well as tutoring students one-on-one from grades 5th through 12th in middle school math, algebra I & II, geometry, pre-calculus, trigonometry, and Spanish I & II. I was also a fourth-grade bilingual teacher in all subjects, teaching language arts, reading, and writing in Spanish. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I particularly enjoy tutoring in math and science, as I love trouble shooting and problem solving. During the day, I do computer tech support for one of the agencies of the state of Texas. In my free time, I enjoy jumping on the trampoline with my son, jogging, working out with weights, watching movies with my kids, programming VBA macros for Microsoft Office, and teaching my daughter guitar, and roller skating. I am passionate about helping students because of my personal journey as a student. Coming from a family that instilled in me a love for learning, I sailed all the way through high school as a straight A student with little challenge academically. But when I got to the university, I experienced a major blow to my self-esteem, as for the first time in my life I began performing poorly academically. Fortunately, with the help of others I was able pull myself out of an academic "tail-spin" and graduate with a B.A. in chemistry and land a job at one of the research labs at Texas A&M in the entomology (bugs) department. Later I went on to complete a master's in chemistry. This helped has me as a teacher and tutor at the collegiate, high school, middle school, and as well as at the primary grade levels to understand the struggles students face when it just doesn't make sense. I realize that many students have different learning styles, so I believe that it is important to create an individualized study plan for each student that best fits their method of learning and allows us to make the most of the tutoring experience. I make it my goal to get a student to discover a method of learning that works best for him or her so that the student begins to experience a string of successes that will propel them towards academic achievement.

I'm a law student and long time tutor who's just made the move to Varsity. I've been tutoring for about eight years now, since I first started working with a friend of a friend's child on his SATs. I graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in economics, and I'm at Hofstra Law School.I tutor the SATs, ACTs, LSAT, GRE, basically all high school subjects, and a bevy of college ones, including history, psychology, economics, law, and writing. That's not because I'm an expert in everything - it's because the only thing I enjoy more than learning is helping someone else learn. A good tutor doesn't just explain the subject to you - they explain what's cool about it, how it applies to your life, and why you want to learn it. If I have to brush up on my AP Chemistry as an excuse to explain why dimensional analysis is actually the most useful math you'll ever learn, I find it thrilling, not a chore. That's really my whole paradigm, as a tutor. Every subject has a relation to both everyday life, and to the coolest parts of the collective achievements of humanity. Learning not just what Pi is, but what it means, is treading the same ground as the people who built the pyramids. We lose that joy - the enrichment granted by greater understanding - too often in sterile and boring classrooms. My goal is to help students attain mastery by providing the context and tools that let them have "Eureka!" moments.Learning is fun, and tutoring is more than just being a living wikipedia article. It's giving life to the dry and soulless problem set, making fun of the trap answers on the LSAT, and linking history to its greatest stories. I don't need gimmicks and games to make that happen. I just find where a student and I can connect over the material, how they learn, and what they're having trouble with.I won't guarantee anyone a score on a test or promise that everyone can get an A in every subject. But I do promise not to waste anyone's time or money. Every session, my students will learn new facts, new techniques, or new ways to understand some boring idea. That's not because I'm the smartest guy in the room: it's because I simply love seeing people learn.

I am a first year public health student at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Since I was in high school, I had the privilege of taking several accelerated classes in multiple subjects ranging from English, Biology, Literature, Algebra, and Modern Language like AP Spanish Literature. I don't believe in a favorite subject, I feel that with hard work and dedication anyone can adapt and find joys in every subject. As a tutor of local neighborhood children, and a great resource to my peers in school, I carry the reputation as the person to reach out to whenever explanations are required. As a college student, I enjoy the greater depth of information that we cover, it proves to me that education knows no bounds and any information can be incorporated in daily life.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Since graduation, I joined the Rhode Island Teaching Fellows where I had the opportunity to work towards a teaching certificate and begin my journey in the classroom. I spent the past year teaching 10th and 11th grade students life science and chemistry.Outside of academia, I enjoy going for long runs. I used to be a sprinter while I was still in school and decided to take on the new challenge of long distance running. I also enjoy various other activities such as kayaking, indoor rock climbing and running off to amusement parks as often as possible. Additionally, I am an avid reader and am always looking for a good book to read on a typical afternoon. My teaching philosophy revolves around breaking content down as much as possible so that all students can understand. I believe even the most complicated of materials can be understood if the teacher takes the time necessary for students to build their skill set and confidence and this was especially useful to me in my time as a chemistry teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PRAXIS Content Exam for Mathematics covers a broad range of topics aligned with secondary mathematics curricula, including:
- Number and quantity (integers, rational numbers, real numbers, complex numbers)
- Algebra (equations, inequalities, functions, polynomials)
- Functions and calculus concepts (limits, derivatives, integrals)
- Geometry and measurement (shapes, proofs, trigonometry)
- Data analysis, probability, and statistics
- Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving across all domains
A tutor can help you identify which topics need the most attention and develop strategies to master both procedural skills and conceptual understanding required for success.
Many test-takers can follow steps but struggle to explain why those steps work or apply them in new contexts. Tutors help bridge this gap by asking guiding questions that reveal underlying patterns and connections—like why the quadratic formula works, not just how to use it. This deeper conceptual understanding is exactly what the PRAXIS exam tests, especially in multi-step problems and proof-based questions. Working through problems together, a tutor can help you see the "why" behind the math, which builds both confidence and flexibility when tackling unfamiliar problems.
An effective PRAXIS tutor should have strong mathematics knowledge and experience preparing educators for content exams. Look for someone who can explain concepts clearly from multiple angles, is patient with math anxiety, and focuses on problem-solving strategies rather than just memorizing formulas. They should be able to help you understand not just what answer is correct, but why it's correct—and be comfortable with the full range of secondary math topics from algebra through calculus. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who specialize in PRAXIS preparation and bring real teaching experience.
Word problems and multi-step equations are where many students struggle because they require translating real-world situations into mathematical language and managing multiple operations. A tutor helps you develop a systematic approach: reading carefully, identifying what you know and what you're solving for, choosing appropriate strategies, and checking your work. Through practice with varied problem types, you'll recognize patterns and build confidence in your problem-solving process. Tutors also help you understand when different approaches make sense—for example, when graphing is more useful than algebraic manipulation—which strengthens both conceptual understanding and test performance.
Absolutely. Math anxiety is common among people preparing for content exams, and personalized 1-on-1 instruction provides a safe, judgment-free space to work through difficult concepts at your own pace. A tutor can help you break problems into manageable pieces, celebrate small wins, and gradually build confidence through repeated success. By focusing on understanding rather than perfection, and by helping you develop reliable problem-solving strategies, tutoring reduces the "what if I don't know?" worry. Many students find that seeing patterns and connections—and realizing they can solve complex problems—significantly reduces anxiety over time.
Effective PRAXIS preparation involves three key elements: reviewing the full range of topics, practicing with real exam-like questions, and developing strategies for managing your time and approach. Start by assessing which topics need the most work—algebra, geometry, or calculus concepts—then build from there. Practice testing helps you identify patterns in where you struggle and builds exam stamina. A tutor can create a personalized study plan, help you understand why you missed certain questions, and teach you strategic approaches to different problem types. Most importantly, they help you move beyond just knowing procedures to truly understanding the mathematics, which is what the PRAXIS exam assesses.
Preparation time varies based on your starting point and how much content you need to review. Someone with a strong math background might prepare in 4-8 weeks with focused study, while others benefit from 3-4 months to work through gaps and build confidence across all topics. The key is consistent, strategic preparation rather than cramming. Working with a tutor helps you use your time efficiently by targeting weak areas, learning efficient problem-solving strategies, and getting real-time feedback on your understanding. Your tutor can help you develop a realistic timeline based on your background and goals.
