I'm a 4th year college student at Stony Brook University working towards a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a minor in writing and rhetoric. I love helping other students enjoy what they are learning by providing support as a tutor! Students who struggle in their academics often just need a role model who can focus on their individual learning style and encourage them to utilize it -- which is who I try to be each day. My goal for my students is for them to see past the challenges and enjoy the process of learning. I have over 2 years' experience tutoring kids in grades K-12 in math, science, English, and test prep, as well as helping fellow college students in biology, math, and chemistry. Examples of my expertise include teaching a class at an SAT prep center, private tutoring for K-12 both in-person and online, serving as head teaching assistant for college-level biology, and working as a chemistry peer tutor for other students at my university. I use a wide range of virtual games, arts and crafts, physical activity, virtual simulations, and real-world problems to make tutoring sessions engaging and appropriate to age level. As someone who wants to pursue research and teaching as a career, I believe quality, accessible education can have a huge positive impact on people's wellbeing and development.

Hello, my name is Vaibhav Sharma and I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. I majored in neuroscience and chemistry and while I was in college I spent my time volunteering at local hospitals and researching novel neuroscience techniques. I will attend medical school at Geisinger Commonwealth Medical College this fall. Having taken all of the science classes since high school, I know how daunting and hard science material might seem but if taken at a very fundamental level, it is much more logical and simpler than how many high school teachers or college professors make it seem. Thats how I approach tutoring my clients. I try to use practical examples on how the science principles come into play in the real world.

I am a certified Elementary Teacher. I graduated from Brigham Young University and have been teaching for 3 years. I have taught 4th grade and 6th grade, and I have volunteered in 1st, 2nd, and 5th grade classes as well. I love helping students learn. My favorite part about teaching is helping students understand a concept that they've been struggling with by explaining it in a new way. I love teaching math, especially algebra. I also love to read in my spare time, and I strive to pass on that love of reading to my students. I enjoy helping them learn to decode and comprehend, because those are the things that make reading enjoyable! In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, baking, and watching sports.

I graduated from Washington State University. My major was Sociology with a minor in Human Development. Later, I became a teacher to assist students with learning disabilities. My biggest revelation was that everyone learns differently.I help struggling students find their learning style and apply it. The process may not be pretty but progress is made . One strategy is "no opting out". Students work on a assignment despite believing they cannot complete it.My approach to tutoring is two-fold for students in elementary school to high school. They must practice skills and learning strategies. This approach does not accommodate college students because of the academic workload. For them, our sessions are project-based. I cover all aspects of an assignment, including examples or critique completed projects.I now focus on entrepreneurial education and S.T.E.M. The subjects that I tutor are: English, Language Arts and Basic Math to Pre-Algebra. I look forward to unleashing the learning potential of future clients.

With a background in cognition based studies, I'd personally be obliged to teach you or your child what I know! Considering that many people go through intense stress in order to succeed in the school system these days, I'd be a refreshing back-seat approach to hopefully engage you or your young learner in the material involved. What is this 'back-seat' approach? The back seat approach is a method of going through material but rather than set strict quotas for a student. I work with the student to help them with whatever problem they may have. It works because the student doesn't realize that they are being guided in the long run, but gradually the student may become more adept to the material. And surely, after a few weeks of tutoring, the processes to solve a particular dilemma, the steps would become second nature to the student. As I am comfortable with anything from Biology to History, and from Arithmetic to Algebra, and even English Reading and Composition (writing), I believe I am a great pick if you are looking for a tutor with a well rounded understanding and approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students typically struggle most with surgical anatomy and pathophysiology—particularly memorizing complex anatomical relationships and understanding how disease states affect surgical procedures. Instrument identification and their specific uses across different specialties (orthopedic, cardiac, neuro) also trip up many test-takers. Additionally, the pharmacology section covering anesthetic agents, antibiotics, and hemostatic agents requires deep conceptual understanding rather than surface-level memorization. Personalized instruction helps break down these interconnected topics into manageable pieces, showing how anatomy directly applies to instrument selection and surgical technique.

The NBSTSA exam uses scenario-based questions that require applying knowledge to real operating room situations—not just recalling facts. For example, you might need to identify the correct instrument for a specific step in a procedure, then explain why that choice matters for patient safety. This shift from memorization to application is where many students struggle. A tutor experienced with CST prep can teach you to recognize procedural patterns, anticipate what comes next in a surgery, and connect theoretical knowledge to practical decision-making on the exam.

The best CST tutors hold current CST certification themselves and have hands-on OR experience—this ensures they understand not just the exam content, but how surgical tech knowledge actually applies in practice. They should be familiar with the NBSTSA exam blueprint and recent test changes, and ideally have successfully coached other students through certification. Look for tutors who can explain the 'why' behind procedures and instrument choices, not just the 'what,' since this deeper understanding is what the exam tests.

Most surgical tech students benefit from 8-12 weeks of focused preparation, though this varies based on your program completion timeline and starting knowledge level. Personalized tutoring can accelerate your progress by targeting your specific weak areas rather than spending equal time on everything. Many students find that 2-3 sessions per week, combined with structured independent practice, creates the right balance for mastering complex topics like surgical procedures and pharmacology before exam day.

Different surgical specialties have distinct instrument sets, anatomical focuses, and procedural sequences—and students often excel in one area while struggling in another. A tutor can create targeted study plans that break down unfamiliar specialties (like cardiac or neuro) into their core components, then help you build connections between anatomy, instruments, and procedural steps. This approach is much more efficient than trying to memorize isolated facts about each specialty independently.

Practice exams are essential—they reveal which content areas need more work and help you get comfortable with the scenario-based question format. However, simply taking practice tests without analysis won't improve your score. An experienced tutor can review your practice exam results with you, identifying patterns in your mistakes (Are you missing anatomy details? Misunderstanding instrument purposes? Struggling with specific specialties?) and adjusting your study plan accordingly. This diagnostic approach ensures your study time targets real gaps, not areas where you're already strong.

Pharmacology appears throughout the CST Exam—not as isolated drug facts, but integrated into surgical scenarios where you need to understand drug purposes, side effects, and interactions relevant to patient safety. For example, you might need to know why certain antibiotics are chosen for specific surgeries, or how anesthetic agents affect surgical technique. Many students memorize drug lists but miss these clinical connections. Tutoring that emphasizes pharmacology in context—tied to actual surgical procedures and patient outcomes—helps you answer these complex questions confidently.

The CST Exam requires a passing score of 70%, and students who work with a tutor typically see significant improvements in their weak areas—often 15-25 percentage points on practice exams as they move from surface-level knowledge to deeper understanding. The exact improvement depends on your starting point and how consistently you engage with tutoring and independent practice. What matters most is that tutoring helps you identify and master the specific topics that were holding you back, rather than spending equal energy on everything.
