I am a graduate of the University of Michigan where I earned my bachelor of science degree in cellular and molecular biology. I chose this major because I am fascinated with how cells in the body interact with each other and the pathways in which they communicate. Originally being pre-med, I applied to medical schools the year after I graduated. Also during this gap year, I taught introductory chemistry lab for science majors at Grand Valley State University. After some self reflection I decided medical school was not the path I wanted to take and decided instead to move to New York City to pursue my other passion of performing on stage. However, due to my background in academia and teaching, I desired to maintain plugged into that world in whatever way I could. That is how I discovered VarsityTutors.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Since I first tutored about six years ago, it has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy making connections with students and helping them succeed. I believe that any student has the capacity for greatness; sometimes they simply require the right push. As a tutor it is my mission to help every student reach his or her potential. I accomplish that by adapting my tutoring technique to the specific style of the student.

I am working as a Research Assistant at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Department of Transplant Surgery. Though I enjoy working in research, I truly love educating others in anyway that I can. My most recent tutoring experience was during the summer of 2014, in which I taught algebra to a middle school student. In high school, I tutored many of my peers in Spanish, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, and biology. I personally love tutoring both math and biology because the material is interesting and also fun to learn! As a tutor, I always try to relate the material at hand to specific interests of my student. I find that a student understands topics better when we find a way to equate his or her own hobby to the material. With that, I really seek out what the student enjoys doing and use their hobbies as positive reinforcements for learning. Personally, my interests include music (vocal and instrumental), sports, Harry Potter, superheroes, and juggling.

I'm sure of, it's that I genuinely enjoy tutoring. I'm also a "professional" student. I say this because absorbing, analyzing, and integrating knowledge from my medical courses are necessary skills for my own academic success. And so, I am more than happy to share my study strategies, techniques, and tips with students.

I am a fourth year Medical Student in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. This is a seven year BS/MD program, so by the end of the seven years, I will have achieved both degrees. I have a lot of tutoring experience in the K-12 age especially in the 7-12 grade range. I have taught SAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT subject tests and Regents exams as well. My favorite subject to tutor is math and biology, but I am able to tutor other subject areas like reading, writing, chemistry, and physics. My tutoring style is very student oriented with some lecturing. I make sure that most of the time I am asking questions, even if it is basic, just to get the student to always be on his/her feet. I also make sure to use a lot of diagrams and flow charts when teaching. Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring and doing photography. I also love listening to music, watching basketball, and spending time with friends and family. Hobbies: books, photography, writing, reading, music, art

I am a recent graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Womens & Gender Studies. Having been a science nerd throughout high school, I knew that I would want to study biochemistry at university, but I also wanted to strengthen my writing, analytical, and research abilities in a non-scientific context. So focusing on both was perfect for me because I was able to develop analytical and problem-solving skills in two very different contexts. Having this background also allows me to feel comfortable tutoring a range of subjects.

I am currently in a Physician Assistant program at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and am loving every minute of clinical practice! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Philosophy from University of St Thomas. While an undergraduate student, I enjoyed leading fellow pre-health professional classmates as campus President of HOSA-Future Health Professionals. One of my most unforgettable health care experiences was a two-week medical missions trip which involved extensive teamwork for fundraising and bringing medical supplies to serve a remote and underserved village in Huancayo, Peru. I also received a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences from University of North Texas Health Science Center and am pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant. While pursuing my master's degree, I learned to ask for help from teaching assistants and tutors, and am immensely grateful for their guidance! I am interested in academia after gaining several years of clinical experience as a PA. In my free-time, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and spending time with my two lovely poodles. I am also passionate about rescuing animals!

Frequently Asked Questions
8th graders often find balancing chemical equations, understanding atomic structure, and visualizing molecular interactions particularly difficult. Many students also struggle with force and motion concepts—especially Newton's laws and how they apply to real-world scenarios—and with grasping the relationship between structure and function in cells. Additionally, students frequently confuse weathering vs. erosion in Earth science and have trouble connecting abstract concepts like energy transfer to tangible examples they can observe.
A tutor helps students move beyond simply following lab procedures to actually understanding experimental design—why certain variables are controlled, what data actually proves, and how to interpret results critically. Many 8th graders can perform an experiment but struggle to explain why their hypothesis was supported or refuted. Tutors work through real and hypothetical experiments to strengthen scientific reasoning, helping students ask better questions, design stronger experiments, and defend their conclusions with evidence rather than guessing.
Understanding concepts is far more valuable, especially in 8th Grade Science where you're building foundational knowledge for high school biology and chemistry. Yes, you need to know vocabulary like photosynthesis or ionic bonds, but a strong tutor emphasizes the 'why' and 'how'—why plants need photosynthesis, how ionic bonds form differently than covalent bonds. When you understand the underlying mechanism, you'll remember the facts naturally and be able to apply them to new problems you haven't seen before.
Tutors use multiple strategies to make the invisible visible: drawing diagrams, using physical models, relating concepts to everyday experiences, and walking through step-by-step animations or explanations. For example, when teaching atomic structure, a tutor might use a solar system analogy for electron orbits, then show how that model breaks down and why quantum mechanics is actually more accurate. For forces, tutors connect abstract arrows on diagrams to real sensations—what does friction actually feel like? How does gravity pull on you right now?—to anchor abstract ideas in concrete experience.
Unit conversions trip up many 8th graders because they require both mathematical skill and conceptual understanding of what the units represent. A tutor helps you see that converting 5 kilometers to meters isn't just 'moving a decimal'—it's understanding that one kilometer equals 1,000 meters, so you're multiplying by 1,000. Tutors teach the dimensional analysis method (writing out units and canceling them like fractions) so conversions become a logical process rather than memorized rules. Once you see the pattern, you can handle any unit conversion confidently.
Earth Science concepts click when you connect them to large-scale, dynamic processes rather than static facts. A tutor helps you visualize plate tectonics by explaining how plates actually move (centimeters per year), what happens at different plate boundaries, and why earthquakes and volcanoes occur where they do. For the water cycle, instead of memorizing evaporation-condensation-precipitation, tutors trace water molecules through the entire system, showing how energy from the sun drives the process and how it connects to weather patterns you experience. Seeing these as continuous, interconnected processes makes them memorable and applicable.
Effective test prep goes beyond reviewing notes—tutors help you practice retrieving information under timed conditions, identify gaps in understanding before the test, and learn how to approach different question types (multiple choice, short answer, data interpretation). A tutor will work through practice problems with you, asking 'why is that answer correct?' rather than just confirming it, and help you understand common misconceptions that show up on tests. They'll also teach you how to read graphs, interpret lab data, and apply concepts to scenarios you've never seen before—skills that distinguish strong test performance.
Beyond content knowledge, 8th Grade Science is where you develop critical scientific thinking: forming testable hypotheses, identifying variables, evaluating evidence objectively, and recognizing bias in reasoning. A strong tutor emphasizes these skills alongside content, teaching you to ask 'How do we know this?' and 'What evidence supports this claim?' You'll learn to distinguish correlation from causation, understand why replication matters in experiments, and develop healthy skepticism about claims. These thinking skills transfer across all subjects and are essential preparation for high school science and beyond.
