I am a fourth year Medical Student in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. This is a seven year BS/MD program, so by the end of the seven years, I will have achieved both degrees. I have a lot of tutoring experience in the K-12 age especially in the 7-12 grade range. I have taught SAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT subject tests and Regents exams as well. My favorite subject to tutor is math and biology, but I am able to tutor other subject areas like reading, writing, chemistry, and physics. My tutoring style is very student oriented with some lecturing. I make sure that most of the time I am asking questions, even if it is basic, just to get the student to always be on his/her feet. I also make sure to use a lot of diagrams and flow charts when teaching. Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring and doing photography. I also love listening to music, watching basketball, and spending time with friends and family. Hobbies: books, photography, writing, reading, music, art

I'm sure of, it's that I genuinely enjoy tutoring. I'm also a "professional" student. I say this because absorbing, analyzing, and integrating knowledge from my medical courses are necessary skills for my own academic success. And so, I am more than happy to share my study strategies, techniques, and tips with students.

I am a University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and will be graduating this April with my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. One of the reasons I chose to go into pharmacy school was so that I could make a difference in people???s lives, no matter how big or small. That is also why I have a passion for tutoring, something I have been doing since 2012. I absolutely love seeing a student???s face light up with understanding and seeing him/her improve as time goes by. I think the best way to tutor is to find the root of the issue whether it???s time management, difficulty in understanding the material, or difficulty in applying the material; and then using different strategies to really address that issue in a collaborative manner in order to really help the student improve. As someone currently in graduate school, I have seen my peers struggle with subjects and struggled myself. Through this and my past experiences tutoring, I have come up with many different strategies for learning and ways to address a student???s different learning style as well. During my spare time, I love trying new things, completing jigsaw puzzles (my current challenge is a 2000 piece puzzle!), learning how to sew and make my own clothes, and just being outside and exploring the area.

I am currently in a Physician Assistant program at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and am loving every minute of clinical practice! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Philosophy from University of St Thomas. While an undergraduate student, I enjoyed leading fellow pre-health professional classmates as campus President of HOSA-Future Health Professionals. One of my most unforgettable health care experiences was a two-week medical missions trip which involved extensive teamwork for fundraising and bringing medical supplies to serve a remote and underserved village in Huancayo, Peru. I also received a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences from University of North Texas Health Science Center and am pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant. While pursuing my master's degree, I learned to ask for help from teaching assistants and tutors, and am immensely grateful for their guidance! I am interested in academia after gaining several years of clinical experience as a PA. In my free-time, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and spending time with my two lovely poodles. I am also passionate about rescuing animals!

I am from Tulsa, OK and came to Boston for college. I studied Biomedical Engineering at both Boston University during undergrad and Tufts University for my masters. After much thought, I deviated from a medical school track to pursue a career in the medical device industry. My love for math and science started around middle school, and I was strongly influenced by my teachers. Through tutoring, I hope to be a similar influence. I really enjoy working with students of all ages (elementary to grads!) In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and volunteering at the Animal Rescue League in Boston. Hobbies: books, music, hiking, art, reading, cooking, writing

I am a Masters in Teaching student at Brandeis University with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and Business from Brandeis University. I prioritize access to a quality education. I work to provide personalized and differentiated instruction for every student in my tutelage. I work with parents and other caregivers to create the most well-rounded, successful learning plan for students, and work as a team with students and parents to develop learning goals. I help students to develop ownership over their own learning, and to feel successful about the skills they are developing as they continue to progress. I have worked with students as an SAT preparatory tutor, as an ESL tutor, and in an elementary school classroom as a student teacher. I am passionate about every subject I tutor, but my personal strengths are in developing literacy skills (reading and writing) in students K-12. I care about my students, and work to incorporate my students' interests and strengths into each tutoring session. When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy exploring the Mass Audubon Reservations, hiking, reading, and skiing in the winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Third graders often find it challenging to understand life cycles, ecosystems, and how organisms depend on their environment—concepts that require visualizing processes over time. Many also struggle with the water cycle and weather patterns, since these involve abstract ideas like evaporation and condensation that aren't immediately visible. Additionally, students at this level sometimes confuse physical properties (like color and texture) with chemical changes, and they may have difficulty grasping why objects sink or float without hands-on exploration. A tutor can break down these concepts with concrete examples and simple experiments to make them stick.

Rather than focusing on rote memorization, tutors guide students through the scientific method by asking questions like "What do you think will happen?" and "Why did that happen?" before revealing answers. This approach helps students learn to observe carefully, make predictions, and test their ideas through simple experiments—skills that transfer across all science topics. For example, when learning about plant growth, a tutor might have a student predict how different amounts of water affect a seed, then observe and record results over time. This builds genuine scientific reasoning instead of just memorizing that "plants need water."

Third graders are concrete thinkers who learn best by touching, building, and experimenting rather than reading or listening alone. Tutors use simple, safe experiments and demonstrations—like mixing colors to explore physical changes, observing insects to understand habitats, or floating and sinking objects to explore buoyancy—to make abstract concepts tangible. These activities help students see science in action, remember concepts longer, and develop curiosity about the natural world. Hands-on learning also makes science feel like exploration rather than a subject to memorize.

Tutors use drawings, diagrams, and physical models to help students see how invisible processes work. For the water cycle, a tutor might draw arrows showing evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, then demonstrate it with a simple experiment using a cup of water and plastic wrap. For food chains, they might use pictures or act out roles ("You're the sun, you're the plant, you're the rabbit") so students understand the flow of energy. Breaking abstract ideas into visual steps and connecting them to things students see every day—like puddles disappearing or animals eating—makes these concepts concrete and memorable.

For students who are struggling, tutors slow down and focus on foundational concepts like basic animal and plant needs, simple weather observations, and hands-on exploration before moving to more complex ideas like life cycles. For advanced learners, tutors introduce deeper questions—"Why do you think that animal lives in that habitat?" or "How would the food chain change if one animal disappeared?"—and encourage them to design their own experiments. Personalized instruction allows tutors to meet each student where they are, building confidence and preventing frustration or boredom.

Rather than drilling definitions, tutors introduce vocabulary through exploration and real examples. For instance, when learning about "decomposers," a tutor might show a rotting log and ask "What do you see happening here?" before introducing the word, so the term connects to something students observe. Using pictures, acting out words, and repeating them in context during experiments helps vocabulary stick naturally. Tutors also create simple charts or drawings that students can reference, turning abstract terms into visual memories that make sense.

Many third graders feel anxious about "getting it right" in science, which can dampen their natural curiosity. Tutors create a safe space for asking questions and making mistakes—treating wrong predictions as learning opportunities rather than failures. By celebrating observations ("Great noticing!") and letting students lead experiments, tutors help students see themselves as capable scientists. This shift from "I'm not good at science" to "I'm a scientist who's learning" builds both confidence and genuine excitement about exploring the natural world.

The skills developed in science—observation, questioning, predicting, testing ideas, and drawing conclusions—strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving across all subjects. Students learn to slow down and notice details, ask "why" questions, and think through cause-and-effect relationships, which directly support reading comprehension and math word problems. Additionally, the confidence and curiosity built through hands-on science exploration often motivates students to engage more deeply with learning overall, creating a positive foundation for future academic success.
