About Me

I have three years of tutoring experience at the University of Redlands, where I tutored college students in general chemistry, organic chemistry and molecular genetics. I am a firm believer that the best way to fully grasp a subject is through teaching. I enjoy the challenge of explaining difficult topics in chemistry and biology in a variety of ways that tailor to each student's unique learning style. Of course I quickly learned that the most rewarding part about being a tutor is seeing your students succeed. It is gratifying to watch students finally grasp a concept that they have been struggling with, or to see their self-confidence rise with your help and encouragement. My passion for teaching, clear communication skills, and ability to build strong, personal relationships with students are essential attributes that make me a successful tutor. I am passionate about education, and I believe that the passion of a teacher directly affects the interest and learning of students. I strive to bring that passion into my tutoring sessions so that students are not only engaged in the topics at hand, but also develop their own interest in the matter. Passionate teaching must also be accompanied by coherent communication. I have learned that an effective tutor is not only excited about the subject, but is also able to convey the information efficiently. My ultimate goal in tutoring is to provide a nourishing environment that allows students to learn and grow intellectually. When I am not studying or tutoring, I enjoy playing golf, watching any sporting event (especially basketball, football and hockey), and spending time with my friends and family and two dogs.

Q&A with Tavleen

I would try and teach the student how to look for the answers when a teacher or tutor is not around. A key aspect to academic success is knowing what resources could help explain the topic, and where to locate those resources. For example, in chemistry, I like to point students not only to their textbook, but also to certain educational websites that contain visual aids and videos to better demonstrate the topic at hand. I also try to strengthen a student's independence by giving them a variety of questions of the same topic, so they can really apply the concept to different questions. Once the student is able to apply the knowledge, they gain confidence and become a more independent learner.
