While sometimes education takes a one size-fits-all approach, and everyone is expected to learn the same thing at the same time, using the same methods, in reality that doesn't always work. Many times I have seen students put themselves down and give up on learning. Sometimes they believe that when they didn't understand something fast enough, that maybe they just can't do it. This is never the case. There are many ways of approaching new knowledge and new skills, and students can very quickly begin to see how their own learning process works. One of the things I enjoy doing with my students is helping them to gain insight into how they learn, so that not only will they experience mastery today, but they will gain new understanding going forward as well.
