Hi - I'm Scotty! I know full well that struggling with course material is tricky to navigate; I have not always felt comfortable going straight to the professor or teacher to ask for help. That's why I love tutoring - I aim to be a helpful resource for students, blending the toughness of a coach with the warmth and comfort of a friend to provide the best atmosphere for those I tutor. I have worked in high school writing centers helping students with both English and history papers, and have helped fellow Sociology students with term papers in both formal and informal tutoring sessions. In these sessions, I talk through their ideas with them, putting everything on paper so we can sort through the concepts and settle on an idea. I then move into argument formation, asking them to put together several different versions so we can go through the pros and cons of each one until they understand why a certain argument works. Though I also am open to proofreading, I like to work through these stages first and ensure my students know how they want to write their paper first. I worked through seventeen drafts of my own when applying, and have compiled the pieces of advice given from those who helped me write mine to formulate the best approach to college essay writing. Social Studies has always been my favorite subject, and that translates into my work as a tutor. I have taught CIVICS classes to elementary and middle school students for two years. In this position, I have created my own lesson plans, edited course curriculum, and have conducted lectures and put together fun activities to ensure my students are understanding the material. In addition, I have a year of experience tutoring fellow Sociology students. I have assisted students with term papers, and also worked through problem sets. In the latter, I would work through each problem with them and revisited concepts when necessary to ensure full understanding of the course material.
