I am a rising sophomore at Emory University working towards a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology, as well as a minor in global health, culture, and society. I tutored in multiple subject areas in high school as a peer tutor as well as a tutor to younger students in elementary and middle school. I also tutored elementary school students in multiple subject areas during my first year at Emory. I tutor in many subjects, but have always been passionate specifically about tutoring in math. I have been tutored by peers many times throughout high school and college in different subjects, including the ACT. I found unique ways to solve problems and expand my problem solving skills through this, especially because I felt as though my peers were better able to relate to me, and therefore cater to my needs as a student. My approach is catered specifically to each student by first learning how he or she best learns, and then using tactics that will benefit them the most as they learn and grow as a student.

I am a graduate of the University of Memphis. I graduated magna cum laude in English with a concentration in Literature. While being a student I was part of the Honors Mentor-ship Program where I helped incoming honors freshmen get acclimated to college life. I held weekly meetings with them and helped them from homework assignments to where they could find good food in or around campus. I will be pursuing a masters degree in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in the summer and hopefully one day become employed as a high school English teacher. I tutor in high school and college level English literature, writing, and grammar. Since my concentration was in literature my favorite area to tutor would be in any literature related assignment. Whether it be for reading comprehension, critical reading, or for research purposes. I believe education is very important and should not be taken for granted. The choices you make in a 4-8 year period greatly influence the rest of your life and getting a strong and well-rounded education helps set-up for future success. My spare time is generally filled with video games and reading (casual or academic) and always striving to learn new things.

Kerr
BA Vanderbilt University
8+ Years Tutoring

Scoring well on ACT Math isn't about knowing advanced topics; it's about solving pre-algebra through basic trig quickly and accurately under a tight 60-minute clock. Kerr, who scored a 36 composite, teaches students to identify which problems deserve full work and which can be shortcut through estimation or back-solving. His economics and CS studies at Vanderbilt keep him fluent in the quantitative reasoning the test demands.

Eileen
BA Vanderbilt University

The ACT Math section covers everything from pre-algebra ratios to logarithms and matrices, but the real challenge is pacing — 60 questions in 60 minutes leaves zero room for getting stuck. Eileen earned a 36 ACT composite and teaches students to recognize which problems deserve full work and which can be solved by backsolving or plugging in answer choices. That triage skill alone can recover five or six questions most students lose to the clock.

Charles
BA Yale University

Yale's mechanical engineering program is essentially four years of applied math under pressure — statics, dynamics, thermodynamics — which means Charles has internalized the algebra, trigonometry, and modeling skills that dominate the ACT Math section. He's particularly strong at teaching students to translate real-world word problems into clean equations, a skill that pays off on the dozen or so setup-heavy questions that separate a 30 from a 34.

Nat
BA Vanderbilt University
9+ Years Tutoring

Scoring well on ACT Math means moving quickly through 60 questions that span pre-algebra to trigonometry — so knowing when to use a shortcut matters as much as knowing the math itself. Nat earned a 35 ACT composite and majors in mathematics at Vanderbilt, giving him both test strategy and deep subject knowledge. He pinpoints which question types cost a student the most time and drills efficient approaches for each.

Scoring high on ACT Math means moving through 60 questions in 60 minutes, which leaves zero room for second-guessing coordinate geometry formulas or trigonometric identities. Michelle earned a perfect 36 ACT composite and approaches the section as a speed-and-accuracy challenge, drilling the specific question patterns — logarithms, matrices, conic sections — that trip up students in the final third of the test.

I'm an Iowa native who moved to Nashville for graduate school. My background is in the life sciences; I have a Masters from Vanderbilt in Chemical and Physical Biology, and my undergraduate degree is in Biochemistry. However, my education has been well rounded and I have interests in philosophy, literature, writing, and history. I have extensive research experience, and I hope to share my passion for science with students. I have experience mentoring undergraduate students during my graduate school education to help them gain research experience. I am a very patient teacher and have the ability to see problems from the students perspective; my tutoring style adapts to each student's individual needs, but centers on getting each student to come to their solutions rather than following any one formula for success. I have a lot of experience with standardized testing, and have taken multiple AP subject tests in addition to the ACT, SAT, and GRE examinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Score improvement depends on your starting point and commitment level, but most students see meaningful gains within 8-12 weeks of consistent practice. Students who work with a tutor typically improve 2-4 points on the ACT Math section by focusing on weak areas, learning test-specific strategies, and taking regular practice tests. The key is identifying exactly which topics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry) are holding you back and targeting those systematically.

The ACT Math section gives you 60 minutes for 60 questions—just one minute per question on average—which forces you to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy. Many students rush through easier questions to save time for harder ones, or get stuck on a single problem and fall behind. A tutor can help you develop a pacing strategy, teach you which questions to skip strategically, and build speed through targeted practice so timing pressure doesn't derail your score.

The best way is to take a full practice test under timed conditions, then analyze your wrong answers by topic—algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data/statistics. You'll likely notice patterns: maybe you miss most geometry questions, or you make careless errors on algebra. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who can review your practice tests, identify your specific weak areas, and create a personalized study plan that prioritizes the topics costing you the most points.

Yes—ACT Math has predictable question formats and common traps that you can learn to recognize and avoid. Effective strategies include plugging in answer choices when algebra gets messy, using the calculator strategically (not for every problem), and learning which questions typically appear early (easier) versus late (harder). A tutor can teach you these techniques and show you how to apply them on practice problems so they become automatic on test day.

Most students benefit from taking 4-6 full practice tests spread across their study timeline, with at least one every 2-3 weeks. This gives you enough data to spot patterns in your mistakes and track improvement, while also building stamina and confidence for the real test. Between full tests, you'll want to do targeted practice on specific topics—this is where personalized tutoring makes a big difference, since a tutor can assign practice that matches your exact needs rather than generic worksheets.

Test anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared or unsure about your approach—which is why solid practice and clear strategies are your best defense. Working with a tutor builds confidence by helping you master the material, understand question formats, and develop a reliable pacing plan you can trust on test day. Many students also benefit from practicing relaxation techniques during timed sessions, so they learn to stay calm under pressure before the real exam.

Ideally, start 3-4 months before your test date to give yourself time to identify weak areas, build skills, and take multiple practice tests. If you're testing sooner, you can still make meaningful progress by focusing intensively on your biggest problem areas. Varsity Tutors can connect you with tutors who work with your timeline—whether you need a long-term prep plan or a focused sprint before an upcoming test date.

Look for tutors with strong math backgrounds (ideally a degree in math or related field), proven experience helping students improve ACT scores, and familiarity with the specific format and content of the ACT Math section. They should be able to explain concepts clearly, diagnose your weak areas quickly, and teach test-specific strategies alongside core math skills. When you connect with Varsity Tutors, we match you with experienced tutors who specialize in ACT Math and understand what it takes to help students in Memphis reach their target scores.
