My teaching philosophy centers on empowering students to think critically and independently as well as how to think rather than what to think. Being an ESL teacher gives me the opportunity to bridge language and cultures, which is something I am passionate about. History is the perfect subject to encourage students to think critically and independently. History, whether it is personal/family or state or national or world, provides an identity and moral understanding. I find it exciting when students move beyond parroting what I say or what the readings say to draw their conclusions and back up their statements with facts. By examining the past, students learn so much more about the present, as well as develop the abilities to use logic, problem-solve, assess evidence and conflicting interpretations, and understand past examples of change. These abilities transition into working life skills as well as develop responsible public behavior no matter if they are a national or community leader, an informed voter, or an observer. Geographically, my life has been all "over the world." Not only have these opportunities fueled my lifelong interest in world history and politics, but they have also developed my passion for delving into American history and politics. Teaching is not just a "job" to me, but rather a privilege that carries significant responsibilities.
