During my Ph.D. at the University of Florida, I was a teaching assistant for Calculus I, Calculus II, and Precalculus, and I was an instructor for a section of Calculus I. These experiences helped me develop my tutoring skills. Many students see math as a set of formulas that they can apply to the problems on their exams and homework. However, I feel that this way of thinking not only stifles true understanding, but also makes students' lives harder. My teaching philosophy is that if a strong conceptual understanding is built, then students will be well-equipped to answer any question that they can be asked. When I tutor, I make sure that students develop this foundation first and foremost.

I have my Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics (concentration in Statistics) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Calgary, Canada. I received my Master of Science in chemical engineering with focus on modelling complex materials in 2016. During graduate school, I have acted as a teaching assistant (TA) extensively, teaching a very wide variety of courses to students across different age groups. Bioengineering doctoral work at the University of Maryland had James building and solving the same polynomial, exponential, and trigonometric models that AP Pre-Calculus tests — except his were describing drug delivery kinetics and tissue growth curves. He teaches the course by pulling apart composition and transformation questions until students can articulate what a function is doing before they ever pick up a pencil to compute. His graduate-level math background also means he can flag exactly where sloppy pre-calculus habits will cause real pain in calculus.

Hi, I'm Laura! I graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor's of science degree in mathematics and a minor in sociology. There, I earned the Frances B. Huston award, the most prestigious award given to graduating students, for excellence in academics, leadership, and community service. From there, I became a student at the University of Washington (UW), earning my Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and a position as a PhD student in the department. I was also awarded the Carl S. Pearson award for academic excellence in the Master's program. I have been working as a PhD student since then, with expertise in all types of math including algebra, calculus, linear algebra, and numerical analysis, among others. I also have years of experience coding in both python and matlab! I spent three years as an undergraduate teaching assistant, helping teach both high school and college level math classes. I also taught multiple sections of calculus at the University of Washington as a Master's student, and I have served as a teaching assistant throughout my time at UW. My favorite thing about these positions were the opportunities to work one-on-one with students, developing new approaches to help them understand difficult concepts. I love coming up with new examples or intuitive ways of thinking through math problems.
