HSPT Quantitative
A comprehensive exploration of quantitative reasoning skills tested on the HSPT, including problem-solving, number concepts, and data analysis.
Basic Concepts
Patterns and Sequences
Spotting Patterns
Patterns and sequences are sets of numbers that follow a specific rule. Your job is to figure out what comes next or what rule is being used.
Types of Patterns
- Arithmetic Sequence: Numbers increase or decrease by the same amount each time (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8... add 2 each time).
- Geometric Sequence: Numbers are multiplied or divided by the same number each time (e.g., 3, 6, 12, 24... multiply by 2 each time).
Why Patterns Matter
Recognizing patterns helps you predict, solve puzzles, and spot trends—skills that are super useful in school and in life.
Fun Fact
Patterns aren’t just in math—they’re in music, art, and nature!
Examples
What is the next number? 5, 10, 15, 20, __ (Answer: 25; add 5 each time).
Fill in the blank: 1, 2, 4, 8, __ (Answer: 16; multiply by 2 each time).
In a Nutshell
Spotting and understanding patterns makes problem-solving quicker and easier.
