Number Concepts
Understanding Numbers
Numbers are the building blocks of all math! You’ll work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and even negative numbers. Knowing how they relate to each other is crucial for success on the HSPT Quantitative section.
Types of Numbers
- Whole Numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
- Integers: ..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...
- Fractions: Parts of a whole, like \( \frac{3}{4} \)
- Decimals: Another way to show parts of a whole, like 0.75
- Negative Numbers: Less than zero, like -5
Comparing and Ordering Numbers
You’ll often need to decide which number is bigger or smaller, and put numbers in order from least to greatest.
Real-World Connection
From keeping score in a game to comparing prices while shopping, number concepts are everywhere!
Examples
Ordering the numbers 3, -2, 1, and 0 from least to greatest gives: -2, 0, 1, 3.
Converting 0.5 to a fraction: 0.5 is the same as \( \frac{1}{2} \).
In a Nutshell
Mastering numbers helps you quickly solve all kinds of math problems.
