What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Explore learning strategies, and get set up to make things easy as can be using our best tools.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach learning strategies using the Internet / iPhone (or other lesser phones) to make learning easy, and helping the student know where to find quality information fast.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Show how easy learning / school can be by using their best tools and hacking learning to free up time. If you can hack learning, you can hack your free time.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Provide analogies, at first. Then locate resources online that will help flesh the idea out further.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Break things down to the most fundamental parts. No quality learning is gained from trying to go fast or pushing yourself way outside of your reading level.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Connect at their level and find out what they are passionate about / what they are skilled in. Then, use analogies that correspond with what they already know, allowing knowledge transfer to augment their learning process.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Show them alternative ways to interact with the subject matter that they may have never considered before. Integrate technology.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have them explain the problem after they come to a point of understanding, and flesh out the process of how to work through the obstacles.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Use technology to show the student what resources exist to make their learning process dramatically easier and even enjoyable to learn. Use humor and charisma to shift perspectives on learning.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Ask them outright, but as they explain their needs, evaluate the root of their problem. Are they not utilizing their best resources? Are they limiting themselves due to a belief system or an attitude? Then address these.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I assess where they are emotionally in the moment, and determine what resources they need. Do they need motivation or a perspective change? Do they need access to additional resources, or do they just need to flesh out their ideas? Being attuned and flexible.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Screensharing Internet resources and search queries. Also, use iPhones / smartphones that empower the learning process and allow students to relate to their tools in new ways.
