Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.
The above statement may be a cliche; however, cliches have a nasty habit of turning out to be true. I firmly believe I have a duty to my students to help them succeed, both academically and in life, and I believe the best method by which I can accomplish this is to impart some of my knowledge of history, psychology, and philosophy. On one hand, I recognize the importance standardized testing plays in the future of my students, and the importance of their success within that framework. As such, one of my first goals will always be to help students achieve as close to a perfect score as is possible for them. I believe it is here however that my methodology diverges from the norm; because of my multifaceted background in the humanities, I've come to recognize history, culture, and language as ineffably entwined. I want to teach my students more than just dry facts and abstract dates; I want them to understand it in context and as a story.
Whether it's history or statistics, understanding information in context is important to scoring well on tests as well as how it relates to daily life. A thorough understanding of a topic can only be attained this way, and thus I believe my two goals compliment one another perfectly in this regard. Albert Einstein once said one doesn't fully understand a topic until one can explain it to a six year old; I'd like to help your kids attain this level of understanding. It's only once a topic becomes something that can be discussed critically by a student in context that true understanding can be said to have been achieved.
