Certified Tutor

I hold teaching licenses in both New Mexico and California. I have 20 years of teaching experience in both the classroom and tutoring environments. My teaching and tutoring assignments have been varied, ranging from working in a combination 4-6 classroom, high school classrooms involving multiple subjects, and adults studying ESL. I have also been guiding students in preparing for the GED exam since it's new format in January 2014. By working with such a varied age population in various subjects, I have learned to work with students with different and unique learning styles and processing skills. This allows me to target the specific areas of need with each of my students in order to find the most effective way to present material so they will be successful in meeting their challenges. After only six months in my previous teaching job, I was awarded "Employee of the Month" as a result of my hard work and dedication to my students. I am skilled in making a personal connection with all of my students and together we always find a way to work as a team to meet each one's individual goals. I really look forward to helping guide your student on a path to future successes.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students have potential, they just need help recognizing their skills. With proper encouragement and guidance, everyone can reach their goals.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Spend a few minutes just talking and finding out a little about each other. I would ask what the student is needing assistance with and then go over the material they might have together to see what direction we should take.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I give the student tools that they can use. Each student is unique, and each needs their own ways of accessing and retaining information.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would continually encourage them and reassure them when they are struggling. We all have challenges, and by meeting those, we can achieve anything.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find the best method for having the student understand the concept. Perhaps it might take several methods until the correct one is found.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that developing a personal relationship where the student feels comfortable with me really helps. I also try to make the learning process fun and not intimidating.
