Certified Tutor

I am a Licensed K-6 grade teacher, I have recently worked in the role of substitute teacher for 5 years. I have spent time in various classrooms ranging from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. I always enjoy my time with the students. My favorite subject to tutor is Elementary Math subjects, but I am happy to help with any of the other Elementary classes as well. I am able to break even the seemingly straightforward problems. Once the student and I have established a good foundation for concepts, I like to give them tips and shortcuts to make things even easier.

I am familiar with traditional as well as common core math methods.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know them, and what exactly the problem is that is causing concern. We would look over what the student's problems are. I'd then let them explain what they think was told to them as to how to solve the problem.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would explain the different techniques for study habits to study lessons.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would explain why these subjects are important and try to tie them in with real world problems, and try to make them interesting to the student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to look at the problem from the student's perspective to understand their problems with the skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

We would take turns reading the section and then discuss the meaning and try to make a visual picture based off of the reading.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find what the student is interested in and then try to relate the subject to their interests; make it engaging.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would assess them when we start the lesson. Then, after we had completed some other problems, I'd assess them again to see if comprehension had been achieved.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If the student is not responding, then I will try a different approach, investigating online for various avenues to the subject.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe every student deserves an opportunity to learn and the chance to excel in life, as well as in academic subjects.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Making sure the student is engaged and the subject is interesting to them.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

We will continue to practice the problem, but find different ways to look at it, because not all ways are the same for every child.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Talk with them, see what they are having problems with, then give some type of assessment to determine where we need to start.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

We will use paper, their text, their notes, any type of electronics, and information I will locate online to assist in learning.
