I am a current first-year student at Brown University, preparing to major in philosophy and cognitive neuroscience. In my free time, I enjoy listening to and performing music, reading, soccer, surfing the web, and traveling. In terms of experience, I've worked publicly at my high-school for an after-school program, tutoring subjects from Spanish literature and English grammar to organic chemistry and calculus. Similarly, I've worked as a private tutor in SAT prep, AP test prep, and French, as the latter is my native language. For that reason, I like tutoring foreign languages, since a foreign language is a process that doubles one's ability to communicate with others without the need for a translator or dictionary. However, I'd say test prep is my favorite subject to tutor, as the progress has tangible results: a few points more on a standardized test that translates into more scholarships and better chances for admission into more schools. Tutoring for me is a transfer of knowledge that the typical classroom of one teacher to twenty or so students doesn't allow--it's more personal. By use of whiteboards, practice problems, constant repetition, and positive encouragement, students start to understand the problems themselves and are more likely to be able to solve similar problems by themselves in the future. When I can see the student understands a troubling concept so that s/he can explain it to me, it's so rewarding.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Tutoring for me is a transfer of knowledge that the typical classroom of one teacher to twenty or so students doesn't allow--it's more personal. By use of whiteboards, practice problems, constant repetition, and positive encouragement, students start to understand the problems themselves and are more likely to be able to solve similar problems by themselves in the future. When I can see that the student understands a troubling concept so that s/he can explain it to me, it's so rewarding.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I'd have the student introduce how they learn best--by reading, listening, or doing demos--so that we can work to see what method of learning will produce the best results.
