Then I began teaching 7th grade English, and I realized that many of my students could not read, so I went back to school and received certification in special education from the University of Maryland. I have taught primarily middle school English, science, and social studies and high school English in Maryland, Alabama, Georgia, and in St. Thomas, the U. S. Virgin Islands. I have also taught adults in night school as well as tutored elementary students in an after-school program. To broaden my knowledge I also received my Master's Degree in Education from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have been teaching for a long time because I enjoy working with students and trying to find ways of making learning more enjoyable and attainable for them. Because of my special education background, I have taught students of all abilities, from gifted to disabled, and those with emotional and behavioral issues. As a teacher, I am very student-centered and try to treat my students individually, trying to see what works best for them and making them feel comfortable and able to take risks in the learning environment. My favorite subject to teach and tutor is English, but I also feel comfortable with social studies. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading, crocheting, swimming, boating, and watching TV.
