I became a tutor because I love to teach. I first started tutoring as a student at Emory University, where I worked with fellow students who were struggling with writing in the Emory Student Writing Center. I realized that I had a knack for helping students understand grammar and composition and soon developed a reputation for my ability to help my peers understand why they were struggling and how they could improve. After graduation, I continued to work at Emory as an Arts at Emory associate, a highly competitive two-year fellowship that gave me the chance to co-teach a writing-intensive course in Theater History. I then joined the Peace Corps and traveled to Chad, where I worked as a full-time teacher for students in the equivalents of 8th-12th grade. Upon returning to the United States, I became a full-time tutor with a major tutoring company in Atlanta, where I tutored middle and high school students in all subjects as well as standardized test preparation.I believe that students enjoy learning from teachers who enjoy learning themselves. As an enthusiastic learner and engaged listener, I am able to connect empathetically with my students while motivating them to achieve their very best. While not all schoolwork is fun and games, I believe that my ability to help students understand the bigger picture and connect the subjects they are learning with their goals and dreams helps them to see the value of their accomplishments. After practicing environmental law for 27 years, I decided to change careers. I chose teaching because that is something that has always interested me, and chose social studies because my BA is in history and history has been a lifelong passion. I have a background in law, government and public policy as well, having been a practicing environmental lawyer and having earned a Master of Public Administration degree. As a Scout leader for 25 years, I was very much involved in teaching at all education levels, all the way up to graduate school.Raising my own four children also involved a great deal of teaching. As a lawyer, I enjoyed most working with younger lawyers and helping them become better researchers and writers, and with high school and undergraduate students considering a law-related career. The common thread in these experiences is working with young people one-on-one or in small groups. For these reasons, I believe tutoring plays to my strengths as a teacher. When I was in the classroom, my assessments always used actual AP questions. My students performed very well on their final exams, which were full-length AP tests using questions from past exams, averaging. In world history, I wrote my own test questions, since test banks accompanying the text involved little more than memorization. I try to inject more rigor into my lessons and assessments.I never go into a professional activity with a client without a great deal of preparation. In my economics and government classes, I prepared detailed study guides both to prepare myself and to assist students. I believe my students' performance in AP classes was directly related to these guides. As a tutor, in my first meeting with a student, I will assess the nature of their concerns with the subject. I will review with them the syllabus and their recent exams and assignments to identify the key problems. Problems might include study habits, difficulty with key concepts, and absorbing the sheer volume of material, among other things. Having identified the problems, I will tailor tutoring sessions to the individual student's needs. For example, lessons may concentrate on practice with difficult concepts Many students are visual or kinetic learners, so the use of graphs in economics is especially useful to get to the solution, and to build on basic concepts, even when answering multiple choice questions. I have experience in a number of subjects and approaching subjects in different study methods.It's been my experience that once you find what study approach works best for you, doing well in school follows suit. I come with a number of different study approaches, and I like to try them all within sessions until we identify what the student prefers. I then work with my students to create a new study schedule using the new method instead of the old one (ie., flashcards vs. rereading the chapter once or twice). I also typically like to communicate with the student's teacher once or twice early in on tutoring to gain a sense of their perception of the student, how s/he teaches class, if the student is missing any assignments, if there is anything we can do for extra credit, etc. I think this helps remind the student that we (parents, teachers, tutors) are all here to help, and that we want the student to succeed, rather than punish the student.That being said, I am a huge believer in intrinsic motivation. In my opinion, intrinsic motivation will help students in ways that no physical, tangible reward ever could. I believe in my tutoring abilities, and I want my students to succeed, therefore I do everything I can to help them succeed. If I can help my students work hard, and feel comfortable and confident in class, then they will do well. I like to work with my students in a way that demonstrates to them how personally rewarding academic success can be.
