Since childhood I've had a passion for teaching and learning math. I started actually competing in math tournaments starting in high school, but even in middle school I would do math for fun. Soon realizing my deep passion for math I ended up going to college for mathematics and now currently work as a Junior Java Developer for BGC Partners. That is a quick summary, but more detail below. In High School, I was very into competitive academics. I was on math team, science team, and even history team. My school was brand new so there weren't many people on the teams, but I always tried to make it more fun for people to come. I learned new math tricks on my own to help my fellow teammates. I ended up being district champion in number sense 2 years in a row and top 3 in mathematics those 2 years as well. Even back in high school I loved to help people with math regardless of what year they were or if it would benefit me or not. Now I usually just tutor math because I hope to maybe become a math teacher or professor in the future! Of course that's not for a while and I would have to do my Phd but I think it would be worth it because I believe teaching others math is amazing and it can truly help someone's future and there is no better feeling than that. More importantly personally I think math is just truly magnificent how these formulas and calculations of an intangible idea somehow explain all the real world.

I always loved learning and excelled in school but only when I became a teaching assistant in college did I realize how much teaching is something I am great at and passionate about.I love to see my students excel and will work with them until they feel confident with their mastery of the material whether for a class or standardized test. I know that each student needs something different depending on their grade level, learning style, background, and academic goals and I tailor my teaching style to my students. My main goal when I tutor is to have my student leave the session knowing that they learned a ton and that their grades will show it!At the same time, my passion for the subjects I teach is contagious and I love to see my students get excited about a subject they previously thought was too challenging, dry, or boring. I like to make the material come alive. For example, when I teach biology, I love to interweave real life examples of how a scientific principle can be seen in nature or in our bodies.I graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University majoring in Linguistics but then did a post-bac for Pre-Med at Harvard and next year I will be going to medical school. My dual background in the humanities and sciences has given me knowledge in a wide range of subjects. I have experience tutoring anything from elementary school Math to High School English Literature to college level biology. I work with my students on what they are learning using the materials and the style your professor/ teacher prefers because I want my students to ace their tests and assignments!I took the MCAT exam for medical school, scoring in the 96th percentile and the 100th percentile (perfect score) in the psychology and sociology section of the exam. Since taking the exam, I have tutored for the exam and am eager to share everything I have learned in how I brought my score up. I know which subjects are 'high yield' and which can be brushed over. I have a very good sense of how to help my students structure their studying and I will work with them as much as they need to devise a plan as well as tutor them in subject-specific materials. I fought with the beast that is the MCAT and I want my students to crush it too!

I earned my degrees at Miami Dade Honors College and the University of Central Florida, one in computer science and the other in math education, respectively.I have been tutoring for 14 years in various subjects, but I am most strong in mathematics. Math is my favorite subject to teach because it's not only fun, but I love watching the "aha" moments students get when they understand.I personally believe in the ideal that all can learn math! There isn't a single person I have worked with who has left my care without some semblance of understanding of mathematics!

ACT English Tutor • +57 Subjects

I am a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. I received my Bachelor of Arts from the interdisciplinary College of Social Studies and earned certificates in South Asian studies, international relations, and social, cultural, and critical theory. I graduated with honors for my senior thesis which explored the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. I was awarded both the Davenport Grant for study of public affairs and the Tololyan Fund for study of diasporas and transnationalism, with which I was able to traverse the Indian subcontinent, interview family members, and conduct independent research. This experience confirmed my love for stories and their potential to build compassion, and so upon graduation, I continued pursuing historical, archival, and educational work as a William J. Clinton Fellow with the American India Foundation. I spent my fellowship year traveling across the country as a story scholar with the 1947 Partition Archive, collecting the oral histories of Partition survivors and helping them realize the potential of their own stories in facilitating greater cooperation between communities for generations to come.I am similarly passionate about helping students as a means of helping them realize their own potentialmy ultimate goal, far more important than just going over any particular subject material or standardized test. Since high school I have developed curriculums and tutored students in areas like character education for elementary schoolers, college essay writing for underprivileged high schoolers, and standardized test-taking for all ages. My teaching philosophy revolves around the idea that my success as a tutor depends on my ability to address the student in particular, given their background, behavior, and aspirations. This draws on my own experience as a student in the personalized, small classes offered at a small liberal arts school like Wesleyan. As a result, my philosophy often translates into a teaching style that draws heavily on high-level devices like stories, analogies, and real-life experiences tailored for the student. Together, we can then boil down the big picture into relatable specifics through which one can find the answer. The process can be thought of almost as putting together a jigsaw puzzle: my role will be to come up with and find the pieces before guiding the student to learn how exactly they can be put together, so he or she will always be ready next time they encounter such a problem.Though my expertise and passion in the social scienceseconomics, history, political science, philosophyis obvious given my academic background, I also have extensive work experience in computer science and programming that I am eager to share with my students. In high school I excelled with standardized tests like the ACT and SAT, in addition to a variety of subjects in the AP curriculum. I look forward to the opportunity to help students in as many of these areas as needed to ensure a solid academic foundation for whatever future successes they aspire toward.Since returning to NYC, I have also worked as an independent writer and musician, with plans for graduate school in the interdisciplinary South Asian studies and the release of my debut album, consisting of songs written during my year in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Hoboken's 4 school districts and serves the full range of students in the city's 16 schools. Whether your student attends a public, charter, or private school in Hoboken, we can match them with a tutor who understands the local curriculum and New Jersey academic standards they're working toward.

Tutors working with Hoboken students are familiar with New Jersey's learning standards and can target instruction to help students master grade-level expectations in math, reading, science, and other core subjects. With personalized 1-on-1 instruction, students get support tailored to their specific gaps and learning pace—something that's harder to achieve in Hoboken's average classroom size of 12.2 students per teacher.

Students in Hoboken commonly seek tutoring in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and standardized test prep for the SAT and ACT. We also see strong demand for foreign language support—particularly Spanish—and help with writing skills across grade levels. The specific needs vary by student, which is why personalized instruction works so well.

The first session is an opportunity for the tutor to understand your student's current level, learning style, and specific goals—whether that's improving a grade, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a subject. The tutor will ask questions about what's challenging, review recent schoolwork, and create a personalized plan. Most students leave the first session with a clear sense of direction and momentum.

Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find options that fit their budget. Many Hoboken families find that investing in targeted tutoring prevents the need for more intensive intervention later and often leads to improved grades and test scores. We're happy to discuss pricing options during an initial conversation about your student's needs.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and proven teaching ability. Many tutors have education degrees, professional teaching experience, or advanced degrees in their subject areas. Each tutor is selected based on their ability to work effectively with students and understand the academic standards and curriculum your student is learning.

Yes, we connect students with tutors experienced in standardized test prep, including SAT, ACT, and AP exam preparation. Personalized tutoring is particularly effective for test prep because tutors can focus on your student's specific weak areas—whether that's math problem-solving, reading speed, or content mastery—rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Start by telling us about your student's needs—their grade level, subject, and specific challenges. We'll match them with a tutor who's a good fit, and you can schedule a first session at a time that works for your family. The process is straightforward, and most families connect with their tutor within a few days of reaching out.
