Making Predictions
What Does It Mean to Make a Prediction?
Making predictions is thinking ahead about what might happen next in a story or article. Good readers use clues from the text and what they already know to make smart guesses.
How to Make Predictions
- Look at pictures, titles, and headings.
- Pay attention to what characters do or say.
- Think about what usually happens in similar situations.
Why Predictions Are Important
Predicting keeps you interested and helps you understand the story better. You can check your predictions as you read and see if you were right!
Real-World Uses
Predictions aren't just for stories! We predict the weather, what a friend might say, or what will happen in a game.
Examples
Seeing dark clouds in a story, you predict it will rain soon.
A character packs a suitcase, so you predict they are going on a trip.
