Basic Concepts
Physical Science: Matter and Energy
Exploring Matter and Energy
Everything around us is made of matter, and all matter has energy. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
States of Matter
- Solid: Has a definite shape and volume.
- Liquid: Has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container.
- Gas: Has no definite shape or volume.
Energy: The Ability to Do Work
Energy comes in many forms, like heat, light, and electricity. It can change from one form to another but cannot be created or destroyed (law of conservation of energy).
Everyday Applications
Understanding matter and energy helps us cook food, power our homes, and even launch rockets!
Examples
Ice melting into water is a change from solid to liquid.
A toaster changes electrical energy into heat to make toast.
In a Nutshell
Matter makes up everything, and energy allows things to happen and change.
