A formal region is an area with measurable characteristics in common. These could include political boundaries, such as nations or states, resources such coal or water, or production such corn or avocados grown.

A functional region is defined as an area with a system of interactions. The interstate highway system is one such functional region. Another could be a water flow system for a city or a metropolitan area such the New-Bos-Wash corridor.

A perceptual region is defined by how it is perceived. Some examples include The Midwest, The First World, Appalachia, the Midlands, etc.

A toponym is the name used by geography scholars to indicate a particular place on Earth.

An isthmus is, in other words, a land bridge. Functioning as a bridge, this thinner landmass connects two others. A great example is Central America, which is a narrower part of the American continent that connects North and South America together.

From this list, Austria is the only landlocked state. To be landlocked, a country or state cannot have access to any major bodies of water.

Many areas of the world have several dialects or languages within a very small geographic location; however, all of the different people groups may be united by or able to communicate through one same common language, often referred to as the lingua franca of the area.

Lusitania refers back to the era that Europe was colonizing many parts of the part and Portugal's section was called Lusitania. One of the countries that Portugal colonized was Brazil.

Natural resources are any item from the environment that has value to it, typically something humanity can utilize either directly or indirectly.

For a state or country to be landlocked, it would have no direct access to a major body of water. In the United States, many of the Midwestern states are considered landlocked. One such example is Kansas.

Possibilism, as originally defined by Strabo, is theory of geography that states that, within environmental constraints, humans determine their own culture. IT is in opposition to the idea of environmental determinism.

The five themes of geography are movement, human-environment interaction, place, region, and location. Abode is not one of these themes, it simply refers to a home or place of residence.

The actual definition of regionalization, in geography terms, is the process of dividing up the earth into smaller regions or units or the tendency to form decentralized regions.

Animism is a collection of beliefs that include the belief that inanimate, or lifeless, things directly impact human beings. For example, these inanimate objects include hills, trees, rocks, etc. Those who believe in animism often worship these inanimate objects.

The usage of a river or part of it to grow sea-based creatures and plant life is called aquaculture. It is used greatly in Japan.
