4th Grade Math
Fractions, decimals, and geometric concepts for fourth grade students.
Basic Concepts
Decimals and Place Value
What is a Decimal?
A decimal is another way to show parts of a whole, just like fractions! Decimals use a dot (.) to separate the whole number from the part of the number.
Place Value in Decimals
Each digit after the decimal point has a special name:
- Tenths: \( 0.1 \) means 1 part out of 10
- Hundredths: \( 0.01 \) means 1 part out of 100
Comparing Decimals and Fractions
Decimals and fractions can mean the same thing. For example, \( 0.5 \) is the same as \( \frac{1}{2} \).
Everyday Decimals
Decimals are everywhere! You see them when looking at prices in stores, measuring lengths, or reading a thermometer.
Real-World Uses
- Money ($2.75 is two dollars and seventy-five cents)
- Measuring distances (1.5 meters)
Examples
Buying a toy that costs $3.50 means you pay three dollars and fifty cents.
Reading 0.25 liters on a juice bottle shows you have a quarter of a liter.
In a Nutshell
Decimals show parts of whole numbers using a dot and special place values.
