The Writings of Early America
Thomas Paine stands out as an important writer in the Patriots' opposition to the policies of Great Britain. His pamphlet Common Sense stirred those in the colonies to rebel against Parliament's policies agaisndt the colonies. When he followed that with The Rights of Man he furthered the Patriots' call to action. Benedict Arnold's Letter to the Inhabitants of America was another writing of importance. But traitor Benedict Arnold's reasons for his betrayal of America did not change anyone's mind or even served to explain the reasons for his action against the fledgling country. After going over to the British side, he served in the British army, engaging in a number of battles against his countrymen. Eventually, as Brigadier-General he moved to London. The newspaper announcing his death described him as "notorious throughout the world."Writings of Early America
