What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself and get to know the student. Once we have a quick introduction, I will start to evaluate how the student learns. By doing this, I will have a basic understanding on what approach I should take to assist the student with the content they need help on.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would teach the student new methods of learning. Some students learn better with flashcards, while others learn better by pretending to teach someone else the information. Once they learn how to become an independent learner, they will be able to learn the information presented to them more effectively.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by providing positive reinforcement when they get a question right. The feeling of accomplishment, along with the confidence that is built from knowing they are capable of learning the new material, will help them stay motivated, and they will continue to want to learn more.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would take a step back and take a different approach. A great approach to take is to go over the basic information that was already learned. Sometimes a refresher can help the student make connections between the old content and the new content that is being presented.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use assessment quizzes to see if the student understands the material. If they don't feel comfortable taking quizzes, I could simply ask them to work out a problem and explain to me how they got to that answer.
