What is your teaching philosophy?

Beyond striving to ensure that students learn the fundamental content of the courses I teach, my objectives are to foster critical thinking skills, to help my students gain lifelong learning skills, and to prepare students to function as highly skilled students. Furthermore, my overall teaching philosophy is active student learning strongly influences student-learning outcomes.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know them; make them feel comfortable with me. Because if the student is nervous or not comfortable around the tutor, you will not get far with the student. Once we have established a comfort zone to be able to learn/teach, then I would start with the basics of the subject and work my way into the parts the student is having difficulty in.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By making the student feel like he/she can do it on their own. Give them confidence and ensure them that they are capable of achieving any goal. Also, by teaching them the basics of the subject, and once they learn the fundamentals, they will learn little by little to become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By giving them goals to achieve. Making learning the subject fun. Nothing needs to be boring when learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break it down step by step until they get it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Teach them the basic concepts; as basic as possible.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

My best strategies are to break the ice, be a friend to the student, make learning fun, and teaching the basic fundamentals.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make it fun. Have them think of the subject being learned as a game.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask them questions. I would have them summarize what they just learned or write a paragraph of what they read or just learned.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By encouraging them and praising every time they learn, or get something; through positive reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking them questions, such as what their weaknesses/strengths are in the subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By utilizing different learning methods and seeing which works for the student. I have to work with what works for the student.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Flashcards, phonics books, and picture books.
