What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that students learn by doing and by questioning. At the beginning, it is critical for students to make personal connections to new learning. Then, students should receive clear and concise instruction on their learning goal. Next, students need time to question and have experiences with new vocabulary and content. Next, I believe that guided practice in a variety of situations is critical so that students gain confidence and ability. Finally, students get to practice independently to further enhance their retention of the new learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Before a first session, I would call the student to verify what they would like to address in the session and what materials would be available or necessary for me to bring. At the beginning, I would introduce myself and take a few minutes getting to know them. I would inquire about their short and long term goals and their interests, which would be usable for future sessions. Then we would get to work! Throughout, I would be monitoring the student's understanding by asking questions. Of course, I would also look for opportunities to infuse humor to make the work of learning fun! During the session, I would make careful notes about strengths, progress and any areas that could be improved. At the end, I would invite the student to share how they felt the session went and what they would like to focus on next. I would add my ideas, and we could confirm our next appointment!
