Charles

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC) and Louisiana State University at Shreveport (LSUS). I received a Louisiana Transfer Degree in Biological Science from BPCC and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry from LSUS. I played college basketball for the two years I attended BPCC and focused on preparing for medical school while at LSUS. Much of my time in college was spent studying and tutoring friends and classmates in preparation for exams. Many of my friends found that I related course material to them in a more comprehensible way than the professor did, and that the time they spent being tutored was more focused and productive than studying alone. While I tutor a wide range of science course, I am most interested in anatomy, biochemistry, and biology as I enjoy being able to relate the material as it pertains to the human body. I instruct students on utilizing the tools of knowledge, strategy, and execution to excel in taking exams, and believe that these tools can be used to be successful in many different aspects of life. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing basketball, running, lifting weights, and playing pool.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is, "How bad do you want it?" I believe that if a person wants something bad enough in life that he/she finds a way to make it happen no matter what the obstacles are.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My typical first session will focus on getting to know the student and understanding what his/her goals are in the short and long term. This would go further into making goals for that session and the week. I find that constantly having goals to work towards keeps one focused and committed to his/her work.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think the best tools for independent learning are scheduling and focus. A student must be able to set aside time during the day to study, and know that when that time comes he will be in a library or someplace quiet where he can sit and focus on learning new material.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way to stay motivated is to set goals and work to achieve them. This includes setting short term and long-term goals, but most importantly is setting a goal, when one feels bogged down by work, that is attainable. I believe that achieving goals one sets for himself is the best way to stay motivated, along with finding a way to relate everything you do to your overall goal in life.
