Writing Tutoring review by Jessica in Naperville, IL
After a few weeks' hiatus I returned to find the student still busily working on applications for summer programs at a couple of Ivy League universities. We worked together on brainstorming topics to cover in the "short essay" portion of these applications, and then went sentence by sentence making sure we addressed all points posed by the questions.

It'd been nearly two weeks since our last session, so we spent about half the time reviewing grammar. The student did fine completing the exercises. For our next session, he's going to be re-writing one of his essays that we've been using in our editing and proofreading exercises. While we'll always keep the grammar and editing stuff a part of our sessions, we're now getting ready to focus on content in writing -- organizing ideas, building structure, using syntax effectively, developing a personal tone, etc.

The student and I created a skeletal plan for her 7-pg paper after brainstorming ideas. We also searched for sources to corroborate her argument, and fleshed out the thesis and concluding thoughts for her essay.

Writing Tutoring review by Katie in Naperville, IL
Student One went first.  He read me aloud a Prelutsky poem and answered all of my questions confidently and quickly. I asked him a series of informal questions to solicit answers that would be reminiscent of the 3rd grade test guide that I saw last month. Student Two was very chatty today.  He did well writing a response to the same Prelutsky poem and provided logical evidence to explain the conclusions he drew.

During this session the student and I went over a written memo that was due for her ethics class. The paper focused on the moral implications of foreign intervention, specifically in Syria. The paper showed great organizational improvement from her last writing assignment and I feel she is making great strides in organizing her thoughts and becoming more proficient in her writing.

Writing Tutoring review by Sara in Naperville, IL
Student 1: She wrote a persuasive essay attempting to convince the reader that students should not be given homework. She came up with several reasons why, and the essay was well done. We then discussed how to write a newspaper article. She practiced utilizing the planning techniques that we talked about, and she is going to write her own article this week describing the upcoming Halloween Parade at her school. Student 2: He and I started talking more about grammar. Since he tends to write run-on sentences, we went over the different sentence styles. I believe knowing the sentence styles will help him identify when he has written a run-on, and he will be able to catch it on his own. He did very well picking out different styles in our practice. We then talked about identifying the different parts of speech in sentences. This too will help him find his own writing mistakes. They both did very well today, and I have seen a lot of improvement in their abilities!
