How can a Writing tutor help you?

Writing is all around your child. They need to be able to write well in several of their courses in order to show they fully understand complex ideas, but if their writing suffers, they may not be able to fully express themselves, which could ultimately hurt their academic record across the board. Writing is such an important skill that even the California Assessment of Student performance and Progress exam tests your student's aptitude in writing. However, some students find writing to be a very difficult skill to understand. If your student struggles with writing, you don't need to worry, because a personal tutor is an excellent solution. If your student needs extra help to try to do well in their writing course, Varsity Tutors can find a skilled tutor in Hayward, CA, who can work with them.

There are many layers to being a good writer. There are the technical skills of punctuation and the analytical skills of forming arguments and outlining. Struggling with writing could mean a lack of knowledge in any combination of skills in these two areas, which is why learning in the classroom may not be enough for your student. Your child needs a tutor who could focus on them one-on-one and target the specific areas that are causing them the most problems. Let a skilled professional tutor in Hayward teach your child all about writing. The tutor will be able to create a unique curriculum that focuses on the issues your student has, and skims over the areas in which they are already proficient.

Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Molly in Hayward, CA
The student's English class will be starting a unit on poetry soon. My goal over the next few sessions is to get the student comfortable with analyzing poetry and writing about it through identifying literary devices that are used by poets, and the meaning that those devices add to the message of the poems. I will do this by having him pick apart poems, discussing them with me, and then eventually having him pick them apart and write about them on his own. This session, I had the student read "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou, "A Dream Deferred" by Langston Hughes, "A Book Is" by Kathy Lauenburg, and "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss. With these poems we were able to talk about the following literary devices: metaphors vs. similes, denotation vs. connotation, imagery, couplets, and rhyme schemes. Every time the student was able to identify one of these literary devices, I asked him to then describe what they added to the poem.

The student and I spent half of our session working on his history paper. Using the feedback from his teacher, we fleshed out his outline to include examples and evidence from his research. In the second half of our session, we reviewed for his English and physics exam. The student has a good memory, and he was able to respond to almost all of my questions with detailed answers.

Writing Tutoring review by Christine in Hayward, CA
We went over summaries the student had written on several chapters of "Cats Cradle". We then went over things she had missed in the chapters, trying to draw her attention to details for close reading. She then wrote another summary that we worked on the composition of together, followed by a three-paragraph essay on one of the major tropes of the book, which we'll go over next week. She has gotten markedly better at focusing.

Writing Tutoring review by Tiffany in Hayward, CA
The session began with the student completing the comparative essay he began last week. He proof-read his writing first, rehearsed his essay aloud, and then used the graphic organizers to complete the essay. Once he was finished, we practiced using context clues to define tricky vocabulary when reading. The session ended with him reading two passages where he will have to write another comparative essay about the octopus and the porcupine.

Writing Tutoring review by Emily in Hayward, CA
Today was my first session working with the student. Most of the session was spent assessing her conversational English skill. Her conversational skill surpasses what I had expected, and I am impressed. We will be focusing on grammar and proofreading her assignments. I will also be giving her grammar practice worksheets to do. Much of our sessions will be conducted like an ESL class.

Writing Tutoring review by Stephen in Hayward, CA
We discussed and developed a format for planning and outlining writing assignments in English. We demonstrated the need for establishing a main thesis statement prior to writing, and then outlining based upon that thesis. We also went over his history concepts. It was a productive session.
