How can a Writing tutor help you?

Writing is an invaluable skill that enables one to communicate with the world. Being able to effectively write is to be able to express yourself, and to spread your ideas and opinions to other people. Knowing how to be a proficient writer allows one to present themselves coherently and clearly, and may allow others to understand them clearly. It may be annoying when others become confused with your writing, and perhaps not grasping the message that you're trying to convey. Perhaps you feel like you're not learning as much as you could in a classroom, and that you find yourself falling behind the rest of the class. Writing is not just an important skill that's instrumental to communicating in life, but is also critical for understanding your course, test, EOG (End of Grade), or EOC (End of Course). Having someone to work with may aid with your learning, and that resource is available. Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Lesleigh in Charlotte, NC
We tightened up the student's first section even more, covering grammatical and syntactical errors. I helped the student to better grasp some grammatical concepts. We discussed literary elements within Carrie and how they were being used. We revised the paper's outline and organized footnotes. We also discussed how to word best some of the concepts in her paper. For the next session, the student will edit her section on King's work and incorporate scholarship into it. If she has time, she will look at the movie and begin her section on the film.

We began by talking about what an persuasive essay is. We went over its elements as well as the process by which one can write a persuasive essay. We then implemented this information and walked through the process of writing a persuasive essay. I assigned another essay prompt for him to replicate this process.

We spent the entire session working together to produce a piece of writing, starting with the brainstorming process and addressing questions of organization, structure and the relationship between the bigger picture on the one hand and the details and examples on the other. We discussed honesty, sentimentality and platitudes and approaches to achieving constructive honesty in our writing.

Writing Tutoring review by Ariana in Charlotte, NC
During this session, the student and I followed our regular format of reviewing homework, learning new vocab, learning new grammatical concepts, and testing through the database. We reviewed the old vocabulary words of antagonist, asylum, camaraderie, precocious, sagacity, reconciliation, wary, and tenacity, and we talked about how to expand on his Great Gatsby characterization by adding quotes. We then learned the new vocabulary of collaborate, digression, anecdote, divergent, hedonist, prosaic, and subtle, and we went over the new grammatical concepts of adjectives vs. adverbs and pronoun case, consistency, and correct usage. He stayed engaged for the entire session and for homework I assigned him to study the new vocabulary words, do a practice SAT writing section, and add quotes to his character chart.

Writing Tutoring review by Margaret in Charlotte, NC
We went over the assignments from last session and I made suggestions for improvement. As part of it the student had read "The Yellow Wallpaper." He took the details of that story and then wrote a story from the POV of the husband (the opposite POV). We then spent some time going over different forms of punctuation and when is best to use them. He then wrote sentences using the different rules. We also went over the root words vocab worksheet I had created for him, and how we can reason unknown words' meanings from their construction and context.

Writing Tutoring review by Carrala in Charlotte, NC
We had an interesting class. We looked at sentence structure, punctuation, grammar and the five paragraph essay. The student and I looked at the same sentence with different punctuation. His assignment was to describe the difference in meaning and the role that punctuation played. I also had him look at a number of sentences and to name the part of speech and function of each word in the sentence. Lastly, we looked at the components of a good five paragraph college essay.
