Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Alexandra in Berkeley, CA
This week, the student showed me her new spelling words and wrote them in to original sentences for a weekly class assignment that will be due before Fridays. She spelled all of this week's words correctly without having to look at her spelling sheet, so we were able to add a few more challenging words to her sentences. We also did some practice with commas and apostrophes.

The student and I reviewed his science test, on which he'd received a 74. We then worked on his essay for English. He had good ideas that he just needed to flesh out some.

The student's mother sent me a very detailed email over the weekend explaining the sort of regimen she wants for the student's lessons. Per her instruction, we worked on writing for 45 minutes and spent the remainder of the session working on word problems and reading. The student was very focused today, likely because his mother was home.

The student and I worked on his homework, which included French vocabulary exercises, a math worksheet, social studies and a studying for a vocabulary exam. We were able to complete all his assignments, and spend some time studying, and he planned to continue studying his vocab after I left, as we did not have time to get through it thoroughly.

Writing Tutoring review by Bernadette in Berkeley, CA
Today was my first session with this student. I began the session by evaluating his reading skills. I started with a 8th grade reading selection. After he made 9 word errors in less than 100 words, I stopped him reading. I then moved down to 5th grade material and he did well. We then worked on finding new words to replace words in sentences. He did well with this activity. He is able to find words within his vocabulary to replace the other words. I then checked how his reading summary skills were. He is able to remember one fact from a reading after reading it. We will work on his reading comprehension along with his vocabulary in future sessions. My goal is to raise his reading fluency to 120 words with no errors.
