I have taught at the secondary level for 40+ years. I have worked with students in the traditional academic classroom, in hands on theatre classes, and outside of the classroom--collectively and individually--as director of theatre in 150+ productions.
My passion for reaching students is to point out where and how they can succeed and then to make demands on them so they will demand the best of themselves. It is amazing how much a young person can achieve beyond expectations--theirs or anothers.
I earned a B.A. in English and theatre from Benedictine College, an M.A. in theatre from St. Louis University, and a J.D. from St. Louis University. I continue to maintain a solo law practice in my home office.
I tutor a wide range of subjects in English language arts--writing, literature, speech, public performance. My favorite is literature because it exhibits the highest level of the beauty and effectiveness of language. But whenever I am working with language and its wonder, I am quite happy.
My approach to teaching is to share the knowledge with students that they need to work toward the goal. More important is to lead the students to discover how to use that knowledge and their own abilities and determination to achieve the best or even beyond. I am a very animated person who gets involved with the student and teaching with voice, hands, facial expression. If I am involved, then the student is involved. I make it hard for anyone to "tune out in class".
My interests outside of academia on in another heading.
Undergraduate Degree: Benedictine University - Bachelor in Arts, English
Graduate Degree: Saint Louis University-Main Campus - Master of Arts, Theater Arts
I am interested in anything new I can learn. I consistently look at TV shows on history, science, industry, geography, anthropology, "you name it"; very simply, I am enthusiastic about learning, period. Certainly, my focus is in the areas of language, literature, and theatre, but my "interest gene network" wanders far and wide. My hobbies are reading--fiction and non-fiction (I do Kindle, library books, books from Amazon and Thrift Books). I ususally have several books going at the same time. I especially read mysteries and about Shakespeare and any and all theatre. I am devoted to mysteries on TV and on disc or streaming. My favorites are Holmes, Poirot, and any BBC mystery series. I also like doing 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles. I have traveled a lot and would have a bag packed in 30 minutes to go anywhere--looking forward to Nashville and a return to Italy. I also would go to the Rockies in a heartbeat. I also like to relax in my lounge chair.
