I started my journey as an educator in high school in Reno, Nevada, tutoring elementary school students at the local public library for community service hours. Upon graduating the summer of 2014, I started in the field of environmental education, completing a two month AmeriCorps term as an outdoor educator with the Great Basin Institute. Fall 2014 I then moved up to Bellingham, WA to earn my interdisciplinary BA with an education emphasis from Western Washington University (WWU).
The interdisciplinary college I attended at WWU, Fairhaven College, was entirely reading and writing based. Growing up reading for pleasure, reading and writing have always been my strongest subjects, and as an educator I want to empower my students to develop confidence and proficiency in these subject areas as well. While at Western, I also earned a minor in Education and Social Justice. After graduating in 2018, I decided to stay in the Pacific Northwest and move down to Seattle to complete an AmeriCorps term as a Food and Garden Youth Educator, focusing on food and nutrition education and curriculum for PreK-5th grade students. After my six month AmeriCorps term with Solid Ground, I took a job as a preschool teacher through the Associated Recreation Council as a lead teacher for a wonderful 3-4 year old class. I currently am still teaching preschool part-time.
I have an interdisciplinary approach to education, and am passionate about weaving multiple subjects and topic areas together, as they often support each other. I am particularly invested in tutoring in reading and writing, as they are both very important tools for communication, and applicable to many subject areas. I took piano lessons for seven years, am teaching myself guitar, taught myself the basics of ukulele, and have taught prek-12th grade students in the basics of both piano and ukulele. In my spare time, I enjoy running, gardening, and cooking. I love reading, writing, music, and teaching, and can't wait to work with you!
