Hi! My name is Clarissa and I look forward to working with you and getting to know you.
I have a long and diverse history of education and teaching experience. I completed my BA and MA in Chemistry at Boston University, graduating in 2012 with distinction. During my time there, I privately tutored general and organic chemistry undergraduate students, as well as helped some prepare for the GRE and MCAT.
After college, I left academia to work in industry for 5 years, but I still found ways to pursue my love of teaching. I worked as an Instructor/RA for Exploration Summer Programs at Yale, I privately tutored a middle school student in all subjects, and worked in numerous after school science programs for grades K-5. Through my industry experience, I was certified by the Association for Talent Development in Adult Education, and lead the professional development program for the company.
In 2017, I decided that while I loved teaching - teaching chemistry specifically really was my passion, and so I decided to return to school to pursue a PhD in Chemistry Education. I am now in my second year at UMass Boston, doing research in how students learn in undergraduate chemistry lab settings. I currently work as a general chemistry teaching assistant for both lab and discussion. I hope to continue tutoring during this time to further hone my teaching skills and extend my practice.
As far as my teaching style goes, I very much believe in the "meet them where they are" philosophy of teaching. I like to really get to know my clients and how they learn best, so that I can identify any gaps and misconceptions as well as explain concepts in an accessible way for your learning style. I am experienced in working with many non-traditional students of all ages and learning profiles, and therefore believe in an individualized teaching approach. Additionally, I truly believe we will be learning together! I seek to create a collaborative and supportive learning environment, where I can learn as much from you as you can from me. Because of these beliefs, I do prefer to do one "get to know you" session in which I can hear you strengths and struggles, how you like to learn, and what your goals are. Please contact me if you're interested in seeing if we can be a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you!
