I have been an academic and test prep tutor since 1999 and have worked with students aged 11 to 35. My core areas of expertise include English language and literature, Latin, reading, and writing--though I have tutored extensively in math, science, and social science disciplines, as well. I am currently pursuing my doctoral degree in Religion and Literature, with a focus on post-Holocaust Israeli poetry.
I fell in love with teaching and tutoring during my first year as an undergraduate, when I was selected as a Writing Fellow supporting my peers in writing intensive courses. The following year, I began tutoring local students in academic subjects and study skills, and, within two years, I was teaching classroom and one-on-one test prep programs for high school and college entrance exams (ACT, SAT, ISEE, GRE, and LSAT). I have continued to teach throughout my academic and professional career because it brings me great joy to see students overcome anxieties and frustrations to succeed academically.
My teaching has been most profoundly influenced by the notion of multiple intelligences, which helps me to approach each student as unique, with existing talents and abilities that can be used to support deeper learning in almost any academic area. While standardized learning programs are often necessary and beneficial (particularly for entrance exams), it is always my goal to teach holistically, addressing the needs and assets of each student as an individual.
As an undergraduate at Swarthmore College, I studied philosophy and political science, specializing in ancient philosophy and political theory. I also hold graduate degrees from Harvard University and the Pacific School of Religion. For the last 18 years, I have worked full-time as a fundraising officer, event planner, and program manager in the field of real estate and urban development. In 2016, I was commissioned into ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). My commission includes occasional preaching and community ministry.
In my spare time, I love hiking, cooking, stand-up paddleboarding, snowboarding, and spending time with my two children (ages 11 and 13). I have also studied Iyengar yoga for the last 20 years.
