Being a part of Varsity Tutors has allowed me to create my niche and develop my relationships amongst fellow tutors and students. Initially, I became interested joining the Varsity Tutors team as someone like myself who strived both personally and academically. My mom's cancer diagnosis and eventual passing during my undergraduate studies took a huge toll on me while struggling to find my true passion and future career. Fortunately, I found my passion for helping others in the community through the means of medicine and education by surrounding myself similar to those in the position that my mother was in. Upon graduating with my bachelor's in Physical Education and Exercise Science, I am now completing my pre-requisites and requirements for medical school to pursue my dreams. More importantly, tutoring has enabled me to enhance my self-confidence and passion for helping others in their own difficulties. Although the tutoring experience has expanded my academic knowledge in subjects vastly, I have also become aware that everyone's struggles are quite difficult and can be burdensome. The reality is that everyone is fighting their own cancer, and everyone is human before they're anything else. As a Varsity tutor, it is important to facilitate for such an encouraging and patient environment in order to promote academic success and succumb to hardship. Becoming a Varsity tutor will allow me to help students achieve their full potential academically, personally, and professionally during their educational career. Your strengths as a tutor and why you believe you are qualified for this role. With my bicultural identity as a Pakistani-American, I have straddled between two worlds for most of my life. I have been able to gain unique perspectives through the lens of two cultures. As most of my extended family is in Pakistan, I frequently travel back to reconnect with the land, people, and culture. The United States and Pakistani culture are worlds apart, but through my interactions with both I have been navigating the spaces of two traditions most of my life. This has taught me adaptability in life, but I have also learned the ways in which I can create my niche anywhere. Similarly, many of the students in the community have faced these experiences with identical perspectives. While promoting an encouraging and patient atmosphere is important, being open-minded and relatable often help build bridges of being comfortable to ask questions and simply getting to know one another. Likewise, there is always multiple techniques in developing a final answer in course-specific material and being able to mentally connect with a student is always beneficial to create an open and welcoming space. Interestingly, the whole learning process is mutual. It goes both ways; there is no one person doing all the learning and there is no one person doing all the teaching. As a Varsity tutor, it is important to acknowledge that learning is a continuous cycle where conversation and calculation have no exact ending. There is always something to be learned by everyone. As a Varsity tutor and with my memorable tutoring experiences, I can translate these skills amongst students and other tutors. My undergraduate studies along with my extracurricular experience have given me the skills and communication necessary to actively engage with this educational community to connect with people directly by making tangible positive changes. I see the Varsity tutor position facilitating my aspirations by building a strong network amongst other student tutors, and achieving academic success for students.
