I believe that all students can learn using different methods of teaching.

I am teacher with 15 years experience teaching science at the elementary and middle school levels. I spent eight years working with Title 1 schools, increasing their STAAR science test scores. I have taught summer school and STEM summer camps, planning content and activities for students.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University to teach 4th - 8th grade math and science. I am a highly qualified certified teacher by the State of Texas. I enjoy participating in professional development that increases my ability to be a strong science teacher and tutor. My favorite professional development courses were going to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama and Sea Camp in Galveston, Texas. I am always looking for more experiences so that my students can benefit from my learning.

I enjoy making science interactive with lab activities and foldables while reading and discussing science concepts. I believe every student likes science and math, even if they have had a difficult time in a prior science/math classes.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Making a subject come to life or be applicable to real life is very important for students who find subjects dull and boring. I hope that they will see that science is critical to life, as is math.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I want to get to know the student and parents, along with goal setting and understanding the what the student needs in tutoring.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student can become an independent learner by gaining confidence in his/her ability to think critically by questioning and modeling how to think out loud, being persistent even when learning is difficult, and modeling how to make mistakes, how to correct their mistakes, and how to be curious.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help a student stay motivated, I keep reviewing content to build confidence, reviewing material in different ways to show different ways of thinking of the same idea, and taking breaks to ensure curiosity.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having difficulty with a concept, I would stop and review what the student already knows by asking questions. I would also give multiple examples and show the same concept in multiple ways.
