Hello! I have a passion for working with children and have been working in the education field for 10 years. I'm a mother of three wonderful children and love the teaching opportunities that i am continuously given. I am currently pursuing my Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and will complete my degree in the Spring of 2017. I have experience tutoring students from Elementary age through adult learners who are preparing for their GED. I love the one-on-one interaction that tutoring allows me to cater to each individual student's diverse needs and the ability to form lasting positive experiences for years to come. I am looking forward to beginning this exciting journey with your family.

Q & A

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would be sure to use all the knowledge that I have learned over the years and research new ways to present the material the student is struggling with. It is also important to provide additional opportunities to practice the skills or concepts that students are struggling with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I like to use a strategy called "UNWRAP" to assist students who are struggling with reading comprehension. "UNWRAP" is a fun acronym that breaks down reading activities into simplified steps to help students succeed in reading.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session with a student would consist of an opportunity to get to know one another, learning about the student's interests, determining areas of strengths/weaknesses, and setting short term and long term goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is important to teach students the study skills they need to succeed, how to set realistic goals, and teaching them to be confident in their abilities in order to help them become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Promoting positive thinking, offering praise for their accomplishments, and integrating their interest's into their academic lives is so important in ensuring that a student remains motivated.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategies that I have found most successful when working with students are determining how they learn best, breaking the ice and building a solid professional relationship with the student, and learning about their interests.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Students are more interested in areas where they can relate to their own interests. Helping a subject that the student is struggling with "come alive" for them will work wonders for them educationally.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Pre-assessments, activities that require them to show what they know, post-assessments, and exit tickets are just some of the ways that can be used to ensure that a student understands the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Praising their achievements, and relating it to their own lives will help a student become more confident in their abilities.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Children are our future. It is our responsibility to ensure they have the necessary tools and equipped with the resources they will need in order to succeed.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Student needs can be evaluated by using combination the parent's knowledge of their own child's strengths/weaknesses, traditional methods of assessment, and engaging and interactive activities.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring style based on the student's interests and learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use a wide variety of materials that I have discovered through online resources, educational resources, and collecting interesting materials that may aid me in my tutoring abilities.
